Tranny issues; shifting early up, down late

Ever since I bought my car w/ 112k miles(has 130k now), it does some funny shifting.

Lots of times when the tranny goes from 3rd to OD, just before the shift, the rpms will go up roughly 400, then it will shift, then the rpms drop properly.

Also, when i slow down to make a turn, it doesnt shift to 2nd or 1st unless i almost completely stop. Mind you the car is in 3rd making a turn onto a side street at about 5-10 mph. I can tell because if i move the tranny shifter to 2nd after the turn, it will downshift.

Again, the tranny is smooth and the fluid is good. the filter/fluid change was around 113k miles.

Your tranny is acting normal. 4th gen trannys are slow to downshift. My car has been doing that sine I picked it up from the dealer with 50 miles on the odometer.

What about the rpm rise just before shifting into OD?

Typical 4th gen tranny behavior. The shift flare is a bit much, I wouldn't mess with it. These transmissions are almost bullet proof.

Put a transgo kit shift on it. Worth every penny.

Are you sure it's not 4th gear? Our "4 speed autos" have 5 gears. At least mine does. I don't understand it. Someone else I know also has noticed it. Can someone shed some light on this?

what do you mean "our 4 speed autos have 5 gears"??? it's a 4 speed with 4 forward gears only! it does have torque converter "lock-up" on 4th (and on 3rd also iirc), but still only has 4 forward gears.

It's a 4 speed auto with a locking TC.
The TC can lock in 3rd gear at low speeds. The shift flare you're seeing might be the shift from 3rd to 4th when the TC has been locked. What has to happen under that condition is - TC unlock, then up shift to 4th. That sequence may case the flair you see as it's not your usual shift, it's 2 steps to accomplish it.

Leave the trans alone, it's operating just fine. Keep the fluid clean by doing regular drain and fills and enjoy the many miles of service it should give you.

You're feeling 4 shifts and then a torque converter lock up. (5 steps)
There are only 4 forward gears in our transmissions.

if you have 5 forward gears, then you DO NOT have the original/stock trans for you car; if you do have the original/stock trans, then you DO NOT have 5 forward gears. i agree with njmaxseltd and believe you are misinterpreting the torque converter lock-up/un-locking.

Same issues here. I've learned to live with it. Its now a clutch-less car since it won't downshift automatically so I have to do it manually. Shifting down to 1st gear scares me though....feels like the engine is going to fly out or something

if you remove the valve body and look up you will see 3 round black gaskets if one of them it cracked or broken it will flare

My main concern id transmission reliability. How does this effect its life?

And thr staying in 3rd gear turning a corner issue doing something as well.

the shift kit will actually make your transmission last longer. engineers spent years trying to get the auto to shift smooth and quiet. when you install the shift kit you make the clutch packs engage firmer and faster no slip. slip ruins transmissions.

if you install the shift kit it shifts completely different. it downshift when it should. at 5 mph im in first around a corner. i hammer it, it downshifts within a split second. going up a hill it no longer bogs it just downshifts. im always in my power band.

if you dont like the stupid squishy, slow, lazy trans install the shift kit

the proof is in the video. the 10 second video is a downshift. watch the rpms you will see when i nail it

whats the cost if the kit and is it simple to install? any writeups for a 95?

the kit is about 150-200 for the HD2

the instructions included are bomb they're real easy to read and understand.
