ebay WJB wheel bearing replacement

My right front wheel bearing is bad. Started making a light grinding noise, like a cyclic scraping, at ~10 mph, and a louder grinding while making a left hand turn. Ordered a bearing and two seals for $34.00 from ebay. Will update after the job is done.

Why didn't you just buy a replacement hub for a little more?

AFAIK you cant buy a FRONT hub bearing assembly, because you have to press the bearing into the knuckle before pressing in the hub.

I'm doing this right now - bought Timken bearings & new seals. Not something I want to take apart to do again any time soon...

It was definitely a painful job to separate the bearing from the hub. IMHO, the labor is way more than the parts worth. I would get OEM or Timken.

After owning two 92's, a 93 and a 99 maxima I learned to always, always put a new hub in with the bearing. You don't have to separate the half of the bearing stuck on the old hub and you know a worn hub won't make you do this job twice.

Yes, I will be. I need to call around and find someone to let me use their hydraulic press. Ive done this many times working for various shops.

Then the pressing part is easy for you (I might put up a thread for others anyway)

Only thing I will caution you on is the ABS sensors. Do NOT try to remove them from the knuckle. There are plugs inside the engine bay to disconnect them.

I found an old thread that said they'd come right out of the knuckle (not the case on my 16 year old Max). Pried a hair too hard and cracked the first one.

I started the install yesterday after work. Originally I was going to use 3/4" all thread and heavy washers. The washers started to bend and the bearing wouldn't budge so I hade to drive the old bearing out with a 3lb shop hammer and drift. I drove the new bearing in with the old outer race and shop hammer again. The hardest part was keeping the pre-lubed bearing free of contamination. I ran into a snag when it came time to torque the axle nuts and I realized I never did torque either side after rebooting the outer CV joints some years ago.

Read here how I torqued them to 200ft/lb with a 150ft/lb wrench.

I'm at 279,624 miles now, about 230 Miles since replacing the bearing. The noise is now gone. I'll post later when I have a few more thousand miles on it.
