6spd and 3.5 in 4th gen

Hey guys. I am planning on putting the VQ35DE from the 2003 maxima in my 96' I30. I would love to go from the 5spd I have to the 6spd. I want to know if anyone has tried or researched the transmission swap and if i can do it.

Welcome. I'm pretty new here too and am in the middle of putting a 2002 VQ35 in my 95 Maxima. Auto tho so I can't help with the 6 spd question, but I'm doing a full ECU swap and plan on installing the engine and tranny as soon as my headers get here.

With every reply you seem more noobish... headers and where you go for them?? Common search the site, search Google and ebay... maybe have a visit in the all motor section where ALL OF THIS INFO IS FOUND: ALL BOLT ONS, OOVI, VQ30DEK, VQ35DE, 5SPD AND 6SPD SWAPS. Even ifiwasn ton mobile I wouldn't link it for you. Come on, Do some research, have a look around the site ffs...

Welcome to maxima.org lol

a 6speed swap isnt exactly easy when you have a tranny that wasnt meant for your car. its a tight fit, you need a new tranny mount, that means cutting off the old mount and welding or bolting in the new one. you have to swap over your speed sensor. if youre doing the 3.5 swap with 3.0 timing you need your 6speed flywheel teeth to match up the 3.0 teeth so the timing is the same. the means grinding new teeth in or welding your 3.0timing ring onto your 3.5 flywheel. you need the correct 6 speed axles. your reverse lights and park neutral switch wont work, youll have to figure all that out to not throw a code..

lots to think about before diving into a 6speed swap

I've read into this swap a bit and undecided on what my plans our...but if you are sticking with 5sp you don't have the flywheel teeth issue right. I understand the timing setup and spacer is a must.

that's correct timing wise I'm unsure about the spacer.. I did the 6speed swap with my 3.5 so I'm really no help in 5spd knowledge. Plenty of guys out there have done this though so there is tons of knowledge on the org. If you have 6spd questions I'm one of the guys to ask

Why do some of you even bother explaining? It would be different if this was actually something uncommon he was asking about doing. but can a VQ35 be swapped into a 4th gen, where to get headers, how to do a 6spd swap?

WOW lol. Well thanks to everyone for their input, whether nice or not so nice. I agree, I should spend more time looking around the site and researching myself. I just wanted some places to start looking and I would go from there. Thanks for those that help and told me to check out ebay, the all motor section, etc.. And thanks to the guy that kicked me in the knee and told me to do it myself.

o yea the only thing i was thinking of the motor was getting a new engine rather than the 03 such as a 08 motor yea its more money but itll be more reliable less miles junkyards lie about the miles its sorta hard to believe a 03 motor at a junkyard with 50k miles it makes me wonder where are all the other low mile old cars when people sell there cars. + the 02/03 are most notorious about oil burning i heard it gets a little better with the newer engines

My brother gave me his old engine from his 03 max because he accidentally went too long between oil changes and killed it. He got a factory swap to put in his car and he let me get the old motor, so I'm going to rebuild it back to factory and get headers for it and leave it at that. Reading the posts from the other guys about the 6spd, I would like to have the 6spd because I would get better mpg with that 6th gear and also a closer gear ratio. On top of that, I have 242k kiles on the car so I'm not sure how long the trans will hold up.

there isnt anything wrong with what you want to do. i was just letting you know whats involved in a 6spd swap. i had the same questions as you and i kind of just figured it out on my own. now im trying to help you. 6spd is the way to go and ill never go back to a 5speed. on a maxima anyway. if you wanna do it then make it happen, reading is great and so is asking questions. sure youre going to get flamed but we all have on here. thats what makes us learn and want to prove that we can do it. good luck to you, and like a said if you have any questions about the 6spd swap feel free to ask me. aackshun knows a lot more then i do so dont be afraid to pm us and ask questions. the more knowledge you have the better off you and your car are.
