Ypipe concerns

I will be installing my WS Ypipe soon, I have looked at a lot of guides, it seems very basic, I was just curious. Besides rusted bolts, what could go wrong? Do you have to do anything special with gaskets? Also would you recommend wrapping it? I have heard mixed thoughts on wrapping.

If your car stayed up here it's whole life, you're probably not going to be dealing with a ton of ruset and what-not. Might be a good idea to put new gaskets on it though where it meets the main cat.

wrapping...?

Do WS tipped come with gaskets? People use titanium exhaust wrap to get rid of "bees" and vibration noise. Idk if it is necessary or not.

all of your header studs will come out and then you will cry.

Wraps are primarily to combat heat, but I'm sure there's some merit to the vibration aspect.

I'd be wary of using a wrap low in the car on a y-pipe like that though. They are known to trap moisture and contribute to rust.

As far as getting rid of the rasp, I doubt wrapping would have any affect. Make sure your exhaust system includes both a good quality resonator and muffler. I had a WS Y, a Magnaflow Cat and a "Stillen" mandrel bent cat-back with muffler (no resonator) and I had some nice rasp. Added a round 4" x 24" Magnaflow after the cat and it got rid of the rasp.

If the studs do come out, do they usually just spin out when you try to get the nut off, or do they damage the header on the way out?

I just came back from the dealer and put gaskets and all new hardware on order, for when my new separately ordered aftermarket y-pipe and cat come in. I figure I'd rather just have spares on hand for when my mechanic does the install.

For 17+ years these parts have been on there, I'm sure a lot of it is all seized up.

you definitely need new gaskets. if your header studs come out, its because the nut is siezed on it and is unthreading the actual stud rather than the nut off the stud. the most you would probably need to do is retap the hole and put a brand new stud in.

When I threw on the WS y-pipe 2 years ago those studs and nuts were in better shape then all the other ones because they are further from the ground. After flooding them with PB blaster several times for hours those 6 nuts separated from the studs. I had to give them extra torque but it still didn't effect the header studs. I replaced those nuts and washers with new SS ones and used anti-seize compound.

I had to grind and drill out all 4 melted bolts on the OEM CAT flanges. I tossed the catback so didn't have to deal with those rusted parts.

To keep the new exhaust nuts & bolts from seizing I loosened them all 2 weeks ago and applied compound again.

I just did mine... PB Plaster is your best friend... soak the bolts and let them sit for about 10 15 min... use a long braker bar to you can add more tension I had my car up on the ramps and everything was ok dont take the bolts all the way out unless you want to drop the pipe on your head lol... brake lose the 02 sensors first and just take your time... always use new gaskets...

thoughts on wrapping
the installation is straight forward....as far as wrapping it I won't recommend that it could lead the premature ejaculation of the ypipe!!!! LOL!!! The only things I would recommend is ceramic coating or some duplicolor 500 or 1200 degree exhaust/engine paint it will not burn off.....
