Damn Dealers...Need help and advice!

okay i reposted since i think most people won't look at the old reply post..anyway:

so I took my car to the dealer..this is what they said i need to change:

Ignition lock cylinder assembly, and re-key cylinder $305

and they recommend me to do these:

Fuel induction Throttle body cleaning $95
AT flush $99.95
Supreme oil change flush due to inadequate oil in system $119.95
Power steering flush due to fluid conditions $79.00.

I was wondering what I could do myself and what the I can't do. My roommate told me that I couldn't do the fuel induction throttle body cleaning..so I probably should just let the dealer do that. And I just changed my oil, so what is a supreme oil flush? What about everything else? Any help would be great. Thanks

(I think my car is in pretty poor condition...so I do want to do these changes)

Have the dealer do the Ignition lock cylinder assembly, and re-key cylinder. Do everthing else yourself, including that fancy name for a plain old oil change..

Like they all said get the lock done by them. The rest you and the trusty haynes manual can figure out. if not come ask any of us im sure one of us knows how to do it

1 down 3 to go

ok i found directions for the throttle body..seems pretty easy..for the automatic transmission flush..is it possible to do it yourself? i have been reading a lot of post..and the drain and refill just doesn't get the job quite done? any suggestions? or do i have to lose to the dealer? and how do you do a power steering flush? couldn't find instructions on those either.

i'm going to ask the dealer what the hell he means by a supreme oil change flush due to inadequate oil in system. I just changed the oil like a week ago. those bastards.

Thanks for the help

For the AT flush, just look around the shops in your area. I can usually get it done for $50-$60 (with coupon from the newspaper) and this includes the fluid. If your **** about the brand of ATF, call and check what they use. I found a shop that uses Mobil, so I'm getting mine done there when it's time. They basically hook up your car to a machine, and literally 'flush' out the old fluid.

For the engine oil level, check the dipstick when the engine is cold (before you start the car). It is good practice to check the engine oil level the next day, and about 2 weeks after to make sure you:
a) put in enough oil
b) you're not leaking oil
Don't forget to change your filter at every change, Nissan OEM filters are great but I've always used Bosch because Autozone is nearer

The supreme oil change at the dealership is when they hand you a jar of KY with your bill!!!

I don't know about the PS flush, but this is being discussed in the forum right now on another thread. Look for it, I don't know if it'll help you.

Good luck, sux that your car is in poor condition. I've got a 95 SE, just under 90k miles and it purrs like a little lion! heheh

The stealership I use, which is a pretty GOOD stealership, has a comparison pricing chart right in the service drop-off area. If you don't want to clean the TB, the cheapest places to get it done are places like AAMCO - they are about $20 cheaper, and probably cheaper labor. However, they don't "specialize" in Nissans. The ATF flush SHOULD BE DONE, and that is about the same price everywhere ~$75. If they want to charge you more, look around for places like Monro Mufflers for the ATF flush.

Lately I have been lazy, or have had problems I'm not sure how to deal with (rear brake cables!), so I've been using the stealership. They're pretty good where I go, but I had some BAD TIMES with another dealership, so you'd better be careful.

The hell with the dealer. As was aforementioned by many of the other members, just let them re-key your ignition set up. Actually i just did a ignition switch replacement on mine (156,000 plus). The part costs me 25.00 from Nissan and the labor was 0, because i did it myself. Do your own oil, tranny, and power steering fluid changes. I flush my p.s./brake systems out every 6 months regardless! I will include a few links that will be very helpful to you. Use a good quality p.s. fluid/conditioner, avoid using tranny fluid in your p.s. system. Also I do drain/refills for my tranny every 5,000 miles, filter (screen) gasket and pan/magnet cleanings every year. Coolant flushes/changes are done every 6 months also, and fuel filter/pcv valve every 7,500-8000 miles, oil/oil filter every 6,000 miles. Good luck! Oh here are a few helpful links. Should you opt to do a brake fluid flush check out Ford motor's heavyduty Dot3 fluid 550 degree boiling point! 96se auto 158,500 miles, Amsoil 0w-30, Amsoil SDF oil filter, Amsoil ATF, Redline Water Wetter, Dunlop Sport SP 5000's.
