Same as if when it was in the car, aside from cranking it yourself

No help but thanks let me explain my end a little better....I have a battery, jumper cables, starter, a piece of transmission bellhousing where the starter goes and a flywheel. Made all the connections which consist of connecting the jumper cable negative to the body of the starter and the positive jumper cable to the positive on the starter then connecting the other ends to the battery. Then i took the switch on the starter and touched the positive and then I dont get anything but a click?? The engine isnt turning over any thoughs??

sounds like you are energizing the starter solenoid but the starter itself is not getting any power. If the starter is in working condition, try giving power to the other terminal while keeping the negative cable grounded to the body of the starter.

Stupid thought but make sure the engine cranks over by hand before trying with a starter.

Side not, you will not get very accurate compression readings on a cold engine. Normally you want the engine warm to do a good compression test. Have you tried a cylinder leak down test?
