Its going to be a long weekend

I'm going to attempt to replace power steering pump, rack and pinion, and upper strut mounts . Her steering is sometimes very scary and unpredictable. I just replaced lower controlled arms yesterday. Any inputs?

for future reference it is called an Insulator. Not a strut mount. You are getting OEM right?

This seems like there is some excessive work involved here. The rack and pinion is rare to replace on these cars unless it got debris past the seals.

Have fun. I have done rack and pinion before and it was a b*tch. Hope you get it done with no problems.

i agree. replacing the control arms, tie rods, and sway bar end links would probably take care of the problem. is it just bump steer or whats the actual problem?

Pump wont have anything to do with sketchy steering. And tie rods would be the first suspect.

As already stated replacing the steering rack is no piece of cake. Mine was leaking due to broken seals so I installed a refurbished one 2 years ago using the FSM along this writeup Kevlo made

https://maxima.org/showthread.php?t=355111

I put 26k miles on that rack and it has held fine.

actually I didn't end up having time to do this last weekend since I started a new job. anyways I understand its an expensive and intensive job but the seals are leaking a lot! as well as the pump so I might as well get it done together. Preventative maintenance.. plus the person who owned the car before me did not pay attention to things like this. Its better to fix it now and be worry free

I will be attempting this repair this weekend (if all the parts get there). Already started soaking the nuts and bolts for this job in pb blaster.

Any tips on how to properly align the rack with the steering wheel, so there won't be a need to re-do everything again? Will keeping the steering wheel straight be enough? (steering locked or not necessarily?) Does the new rack come in centered as well?

Kevlo's write-up is good, indeed.
