Engine VIN?

Engine VIN?

I am working with a 1995 Nissan Maxima that was recently purchased. The problem is the engine is not passing emissions. I have done a large amount of repairs to help pass this vehicle but I believe the engine is from a different model year.

-The evaporative emissions purge control valve has electrical tape over the connector and I can not find the connector for it.

-The EGR system has two solenoids that are not connected via electrical connectors and I can not find the connectors for them. This is the most probable cause for emissions failure.

Like I said I have done a large amount of work and am at a total loss of what to do now. I need to know the model year this engine is from to see if it is even a compatible engine for emissions reasons. Or if you guys are able to cross check the pictures with your 1997 Maxima. Thanks for the help guys!

TLDR: Where is the VIN# on the engine?

I am not sure if there is a VIN number on the engine.

If your car is newer and you engine is older it is possible that the engine does not have the emissions equipment the ECU is looking for?

Do you have any codes on the ECU? If you do and the codes are for those emissions stuff that are not connected anywhere than they are the problem.

I assume your car is 4th gen. Get a working ECU from the junk yard for 95 Maxima and put it in. That should solve your issue.

The vehicle is a 1995 model with a good ECU. I failed to mention the transmission has a VIN# on it from a 1997 and I believe the engine may be the same explaining the disconnected parts.

I have 3 codes in the system right now.

25- idle speed control (its connected, lol)

35- EGR temp sensor (temp sensor also connected)

38- Closed loop control (I am guessing this means the car is staying in open loop all the time? Not sure, this is a new one since I repaired two other codes.)

The codes it had in the past that have been repaired where for B2S1 HO2S, knock sensor and intake air temp sensor.

The part in the first photo is the "EVAP Canister Purge Volume Control Valve". This was only on the Cali spec engines in 1995. In 1996 it was on all cars.

So what you are working on is a Fed spec car. Because the car was not built for this valve, the wire harness doesn't have the connector for this and other pollution control valves. More importantly, the ECM (or ECU) is not programmed to deal with those valves. In fact, the 1995 Fed spec ECM is a desired item for engine swappers since it doesn't monitor all those valves.

To verify that you have a FED spec car, look at metal plate on the passenger side firewall. On that plate you will see the VIN. Just below that is an ID# that you want to look at. It will start with the letter B, which means it is a Maxima. Count over to the 12th character. Letter U means USA market except Cali, letter V means Cali market and letter N means Canada market. Characters 8, 9 and 10 are A32 for the engine type.

To your original question - Nissan did not put the car's VIN on the engine the engine. It has a serial number on it located on the block right behind the right side cylinder head, offset towards the center of the engine.

This is what I know about it and it isn't much. I am using my 1997 Maxima serial number as an example: VG30566641A

Type -- VG30
Serial -- 566641
Class -- A Series

My guess is that the engine serial number is sequential to the manufacturing order
like a car VIN number. Besides Nissan, I don't know who could further decipher the number.

25 (P0505) is the IACV - Idle Air Control Valve. The stepper motor may be shorted. See the FSM for how to ohm the motor windings.

35 (P1401) is the EGR Temperature sensor. Sensor could have taken a hit and is damaged.

38 (P0150) is an O2 sensor, right bank, front sensor or B1S1.
