use trailer hitch or Tow ball mount?
use trailer hitch or Tow ball mount?
First of all, I know nothing about how to hook up a trailer to a car. My question here may sounds really naive (or stupid).
I need to move from California to Colorado and am thinking about driving my 1996 Nissan Maxima all the way. I will drag a trailer for moving my belongings with me. However, I'm not sure if I need a trailer hitch or Tow ball mount for the trailer (U haul 5 x 8 cargo trailer). For sure, I'll have a professional install the hitch or ball mount for safety. The weight of my stuff is no more than 300 pounds, I hope this is okay to my Maxima. Some of my stuffs are too oversized for sending through Fedex/UPS, so I think I need a trailer to make the moving as cheap as possible.
appreciate your reply.

The weight of that cargo trailer is 900 lbs + your 300 lbs cargo is 1200. You will need a receiver hitch and a 1 7/8" or 2" tow ball mount. I'd recommend a hitch with a rating of 2000 lbs GTW just to be on the safe side. I personally have this receiver hitch http://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Hitc...cleid=19991910
Found it on craigslist for $30 and was pretty easy to install. I got this one because it hides very well and can barely notice it. Tows up to 2000 pounds. Tongue weight is 200 lbs and refers to pressure being put down on the hitch let's say like a bicycle rack with bikes so I believe you can disregard that number as far as the cargo trailer is concerned. I've never towed anything with it and only used it with a bike rack and 2 bikes but seems really sturdy and imagine it would tow something just fine.
You can always check with u-haul as well as they sell hitches and do installations but I believe their hitches go all the way across the bottom of the vehicle which would make it a little more noticeable
Good luck!
