They are an option. I have them on my 98 se. I'm not sure what package it came with or if it was a stand alone option. They are located in the side of the seat which is better than being attached in the door imo.

They were an option in 98 and came standard in 99.

Oh really... I never knew that. I have a 97 SE with every option so do you think it'd have the side airbags as well? (bought it used so I don't know if it does) I'll check next time...how would you be able to tell if it has side airbags in the seat side?

If you have a 97 you don't have them because they weren't available. If you do by some crazy scenario have them you would have a cover on the side of the seat that says SRS or something like that.

I am sitting here looking at a 99 Maxima sales brochure and it says they were standard on 99 SE/GLE models. There is even a small article on how SE/GLEs come with them.

I guess my above post needs to change to only applying to SE/GLE's.

I have to keep editing this post as I keep finding new info. Nissannews.com has the following quote on 99's: "Front-seat supplemental side-impact air bags are optional on SE and GLE models as part of the Deluxe Seating Package."

I think I finally figured out my problem. This brochure I have came from e-Bay and I just noticed it is a Canadian version. It has the ES model in it and advertises www.nissancanada.com on the back. So they were optional for 98 and 99 SE/GLE models in the US and standard on 99's in Canada.
