EGR blockoff

99 max SE, i want to blockoff the EGR tube. cleaned it a couple years ago & the P0400 code is back. dont want to go through that again so my question is what to do with the sensor? if anyone can help, i'd appreciate it. the code needs to be clear to pass inspection

I got a 240sx block off plate from eBay to see if they were the same. They are not however all I had to do was cut the ears of the plate a bit and it works. It was only $7. I also drilled and tapped the plate for my old egr sensor so it could go somewhere instead of just hanging.

Now I have not driven the car yet so I'm not sure if I will run into a cel or not by having the sensor in the intake. I can report back once I get her back on the road this week. I did remove the sensor from the tube for a week as a test to see if I would throw a code and I did not.

Also when I removed the entire egr assembly I had coolant and vacuum lines attached to a bracket on the egr system. I removed the lines and bracket, capping the vacuum off and looping the coolant lines that ran through the Intake manifold and throttle body. I'm sure I will have a high idle now but I can fix that.

Have any pics of your 240sx plate during or after installation?

Are you saying to block off both holes from the egr tube?
Meaning the egr tube is closed on both sides.

I have one test fitting it but you can't see much Ill edit this post when I get home and post a picture. It was just a tad too small and the bolt holes didnt line up. I just cut straight out from the bolt holes so I could bolt it down.

Why do that with the sensor?^ just curious since you can just let it hang somewhere

Simply because I didn't just want it hanging somewhere. Also just to appear a little more stock. If there's a sensor hanging with nowhere to go its a little obvious that something is missing. Just personal preference.

Thanks, schmelly, I was installing headers and I figured I might as well remove the egr since I have a 01 vi laying here.

Anyways I got the max running last night and no egr codes. However I had to remove the fast idle thermo valve because I looped the throttle body coolant lines. The 240 BOP does work just requires a little modification for those who don't want to make a BOP from scratch. Good luck.

Your intake should stay cleaner and you won't have to clean out the egr ever again.

What do you do with the tube from the exhaust to the intake? Anymore photos of the procedure? Any CEL? My car is currently throwing the EGR flow code.

I wish to do the block off to not have this issue!! I just want to make sure that I dont have an issue and no more CEL.

Thanks in advance.
PS: on my old car (Neon) if you blocked the EGR, you blocked both the intake and exhaust with plates, but without a performance computer or stand alone or using a diode you would get a CEL.

Actually the block off plate bolts onto the intake manifold. I couldnt find a bolt to fit the egr bung on the rear header. So I had a friend weld it shut. You will not get a code if you leave the sensor plugged in. You can do something like I did or just let it hang. Id atleast zip tie it somewhere. I have a few pictures but i dont know how helpful they will be.

Here's the pile of junk I removed from the engine.

Here's the coolant lines looped and the vacuum for the egr capped off. Reason for looping the coolant was it was a pain to deal with when removing the intake manifold and I didnt want to have to deal with it when installing my 00VI.

When I did my header install I just cut the tube and hammered it flat. Then I JB Welded a bolt in the hole on the header.

As long as you seal it up your good. We dropped a o2 bung plug down into it and welded around it to seal it up lol.

An easier way to block the manifold/header is with an O2 sensor nut and a nickle.

i dont see how this could work if the sensor doesnt sense anything.

Where did you block the egr off. Just the intake manifold and the block, or did you do the header as well

does anyone know what sets off the code, is it the sensor's resistance?
havent driven enough to know, but i tested the sensor & it works. EGR coils measure correct.
i can hard-wire a resistor in place of the sensor if that would work. maybe disconnect the EGR solenoid too.

That is the one code even the best have trouble with.

Your best bet is to try to connect it in some way.
There are ways to get the code to go away, but not a resistor, and not removing it.

I would just ignore the light and check codes every now and then.

You could always do the bulb mod and just unplug your CEL bulb.

the light does not bother me. the motor operates & performs well with p0400 code.
passing state inspection is my goal.

I forget about that.
Kansas resident here...

The above posts say they just tuck the temp sensor on the heater hose sleeve.
Tricks the ECU.

I don't understand why yours throws a code but mine does not. Does the 99 have more than just the temp sensor in the egr system?
