Use Fuel Pump to Pump tank out?

I'd like to use the fuel pump to pump the gas out of my tank before scrapping the car.

I figure I can just hook a hose to the output of the fuel filter and run it to my other car... but what do I need to do to keep the fuel pump running with the engine off? Will it run continuously in the ON position, or will the computer shut it off when it sees the engine isn't spinning? If it shuts off, how can I jumper it to run?

Thanks,

Or, better yet, you can use a siphon...

how is a siphon better than a pump. And you have to siphon from a high spot to a low spot. Pump from the old tank right into the filler of the new car.

OK, thanks, I will hot wire to the pump.

Yep,siphon is a problem... tank of receiving car has a filler up high, I'd be pulling form down low. Gravity won't be loving me.

The fuel pump should run when in the ON position. iirc it should build up to about 14 psi then shut off. So if you take the hose directly off the fuel pump it should pump continually. In theory.

Interesting... I will try that first then.

Siphon > gas can > new car

Seems a lot easier than messing with jumping the pump from a battery, given that blackthorn's idea doesn't work.

yeah just give constant power to the fuel pump and you can pump out all of the gas. siphoning is worse, mouth full of gas isnt fun

Nope, it don't work like that...the fuel pump timer is fixed..pressure has nothing to do with it...you have to use a jumper wire...

Thanks,
Most recyclers require that you remove the fuel tank or at least have a huge hole in it prior to scrapping the vehicle, so you're likely going to have to drop the tank anyway..so just drop it out and deal with the fuel thats still in it later..

Greeny: there's enough in there that dropping the tank will be a PITA right now. I'll go with the jumper wires, since I'll have to pump it sooner or later.

Does pulling the pump/sender qualify?

usually, no it doesn't..My recycler requires at least 2 holes 6 inches wide in each end of the fuel tank before they will accept it...personally, i just remove the tank and deal with it later... check your local recyclers requirements for their requirements, because their isn't a industry standard for this...

Go Home Depot or Lowes, buy a drill pump, about $6, and some fittings and hose. See this:

Why would I want to buy a non-fuel pump when there's one already in the tank that will pump down to empty?
