96 maxima starting issues

I was starting my car and it spit and sputtered then the engine stopped. When I went to start it again, I heard a sound that made me believe my timing chain broke and the starter just spun real fast. I did some research and some one said it might be grounding issues instead of a timing chain break....any thoughts before I tear the engine apart? Thank you.

Wow. great advise. I did that and it moved. That made me look elsewhere and boy do I feel dumb. My positive cable was loose. Tightened it and started right up. Im no mechanic but I thought I had a great understanding of my car, but...anyway thank you all. Problem solved.
