Question about my daughters 97 Maxima

I have a question about my daughters 97 Maxima. Last week the Maxima would not start. You could turn the starter and just hear a click sound but the radio lights etc still worked. For 3 days it would not start. Finally I got it started and took it to Gateway tire. Of course at Gateway tire the car started perfectly every time but they ran an electrical test and said everything was ok but they recommended putting a starter on it which I agreed on. When I picked the car up the engine light was on,so I asked them why the light was on when it wasn't on when I took it there. They said the code is P 0110. They said to just watch the gas mileage and if it starts using too much gas then they could fix the code or problem that causes the code. Is it a coincidence that getting a new starter would cause a code or engine light to come on when it wasn't on before? 3 months ago I had to replace a knock sensor and then right after the knock sensor replacement the engine light came on again and I had to pay $300.00 to have some type of port chiseled out by hand. Now the engine light is on again. What does P 0110 mean? I am totally ignorant when it comes to cars. Thanks for any advice. I just think its odd that the light did not come on until after they fixed the starter.

P0110 is Intake Air Temperature Sensor. Look at the picture below, it could possibly be unplugged from where Gateway changed the starter.

Now on to your original problem. Did the starter fix the issue? If not, the next time it does this, try giving the car gas and see if it will start. You could have a clogged/dirty Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) or possibly a bad Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) .

Hope this helps and welcome to the org. Also, for future reference, you can check the codes yourself by following the directions in this link http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecu.html

Thanks for your help. I saw that pic in another thread when I googled the P code, which is what brought me to the forum. The car starts fine now. Gateway said it started fine the whole day they had it, but in wouldn't start for 3 days for me. I thought the same thing about it possibly being unplugged. I asked gateway if maybe they unplugged something by accident, but they would not look. The only brought out the code reading machine and told me what the code was. I'm going to show this pic to my husband when he wakes up so he can check it out. Thanks for your help.

Hope you can get it worked out. The iat is relatively easy to find. In the future I would avoid a shop that wont double check their own work.

This should be an easy fix. Find the sensor and plug it back in.
Find another mechanic.

Find another mechanic...couldn't have said it better my self. The IAT is more than likely unplugged. Plug it up, you will have to get codes clear, advance or autzone can do this easy. GoodLuck

Thanks everyone for the replies. I specifically asked Gateway tire if it could be the ignition switch instead of the starter because I had a ignition switch go out on my 2006 Saturn Ion.( The Saturn Ion is the WORST car in the world) Gateway Tire said if it was the Ignition switch that when we tried to start the car that nothing would happen, no lights radio, etc. so I said to fix the starter if that is what they thought was correct. Another thing about the Maxima is the alarm system is really good! It's a 1997 and I don't know if it came with a key fob or not but when I bought the car last year I was not given a Fob,only a black key and a gray key. Anyway somehow my daughter set the alarm off at Starbucks and we could not figure out how to shut it off so I yanked the fuses for the horn and read online about using the key in the trunk to cut the alarm off or something like that. It worked.

It should have come with a fob which looks like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/NISSAN-KEYLESS-ENTRY-REMOTE-KEY-FOB-CLICKER-REPLACEMENT-TRANSMITTER-A269ZUA078-/171047501891?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1997%7CModel%3AMaxima&hash=item27d339c043&vxp=mtr I think it's just a matter of reprogramming it for your car. You'd have to search to figure out the procedure though cause i can't remember off the top of my head.

EDIT I searced for you and here is a link to the steps to program it http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...ry-remote.html

Thanks for the links and info. I cannot remember what she did that caused the alarm to go off but I had to drive to Starbucks and the first thing I did was yank out the horn fuses, and they were in there really tight, because by the time I got there the alarm/horn had been blaring for over ten minutes. I think the people at Starbucks wanted to kill me, I dont blame them. Once I yanked the fuses I used Starbucks wifi and googled about what to do to stop the alarm. I think I had to put the key in the trunk and open the trunk or something weird like that but it worked. I'm thinking about buying that key fob. For $15 I think it's a good deal. Thanks for the links and info. Also thank you to everyone that replied to my initial post!

The igniton switch can go bad, and still work. Try holding it in the start position and then wiggle the key slightly thats always a good indication of a bad switch. Mines been doing it for years..lol

The alarms in the max only go off if the door is opened when its locked. Once my door was like half locked, and I opened it the alarm went off.

pics of the custom chiseled port, please. never should anyone chisel anything for a stock part replacement.
in the future, take the car to autozone to have them check your electrical system for free.

If the alarm goes off, you can use the key to stop it. Put the key in the door and lock the door.

There are many places on line that sell the key fobs. You can get both Nissan originals and 3rd party after market ones. The Nissan ones will be more expensive, but the others work ok. Maximas from 95 thru 99 and Infiniti i30 from 1996 thru 1999 use the same key fob. When buying a key fob (Nissan or after market), make sure is has a FCC ID# of A269ZUA078.

That's probably caused by slop between the key lock cylinder and the ignition switch. Very frustrating, because it's so intermittent. When it gets a little more worn, wiggling won't help. I found that if I kept trying (like 10 or 15 times) I could get it to start, until I finally fixed it. Sara, if that's your problem, it will come back. If it does, search this forum for "slop" or ask again.

just another suggestion, and maybe someone with more experience with the part on this car can step in a clarify, but ive had a similar issue with the NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH going bad. on my truck, (and ill assume on this car too) there is a switch that detects when the shifter is in neutral or park, and will only allow the car to start if the shifter is in one of these positions. if nothing else checks out - you can try to turn the key foward, shift down to 1st then back to park - try to start the car again and see if that made any difference. you can also try to start the car in neutral and see if that does anything.

** im assuming here when you say "the car wouldnt start for three days" that means the car wouldnt crank at all...
