Y-Pipe gasket alternatives
Y-Pipe gasket alternatives
I have a Warpspeed cali spec on my maxima and I can never seem to get the thing to seal. I used some crush rings from Autozone and O'reileys. I think Walker and Felpro brands. Both seemed to small but the guy assured me they were correct, but the thing still leaks and is annoying.
My next option is to either buy some OEM crush rings and try them, or I was looking on Egay and found this... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vibrant-1462-Graphite-3-Bolt-Exhaust-Gasket-2-50-ID-/290785550754?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43b42b61a2&vxp=mtr
Was wondering if anybody has tried this as another method of sealing them at all and if it worked? And what gaskets you all are using?
Thanks in advance org

OK so those places are oem dealers basically, but much cheaper. I''ll check out what they got going on.
Anybody else any experience with the 3 hole gaskets please chime in...
Thanks amerikaner for your input
courtesyparts.com and nissanpartsasap.com ARE OEM nissan dealers, no "basically" about it
Just they don't have the ridiculous markup that other dealers have.
And you're welcome - hope you can find a gasket that stops your exhaust leaks

Any gasket will work, the key is to make sure both surfaces are FLAT. Use a wire brush or disc sander to get the surfaces clean and flat. Then throw any gasket you want on and it should seal just fine. I've done mine 4 times now with just a $4 felpro with no issues.
OK cool thanks for response. I'll start taking it down tonight and get the brush out.. thanks man
Question...Are you talking about where the ypipe meets the cat, the headers, or all 3 spots?
How well does your ypipe meet up with the cat? Perfect fit? Flush? Same questions for where it meets the headers...
Where the ypipe meets the headers, that's were crush rings should be utilized; I'd use OEM crush gaskets there. The gasket in your picture is used where the ypipe meets the cat.

Actually, the one he has there pictured is where the y-pipe meets the exhaust manifold. Makes no damn sense why he would use that instead of a crush ring when it was designed for it. That gasket will not work period unless like njmaxseltd said, you cut down at least quarter inch to get rid of crush groove.

OK I'm leaning on those OEM crush and am ordering them as we speak. I was merely asking if any other kind of gasket would work.
Thanks for your input Wiz
Where the Y-pipe meets the manifolds. It meets perfect with my cat, I have a used a good Felpro on that gasket and it has sealed nicely.

I have nothing mixed up. I was merely asking a question on if there were any alternatives to work for the Y-Pipe to seal it properly.. I know of this groove, and there are those 3 hole gaskets with a groove on them as well. I just posted a picture off of Egay to show the "style" I was thinking of using on it.
Again, thank you all for your opinions/thoughts, I have since decided to order the OEM crush gaskets and hope to have better luck there.
Thank you once again guys

The crush rings should work, tighten slowly and alternate between banks, don't just tighten the 3 nuts on one then the 3 on the other. If for some reason that doesn't work, somehow the y pipe is bent then you'll have to use something like Rutland furnace cement.
