It was raining on the heavier side today in NYC and I was driving on a ramp going down at 40 mph. I tried to hit the brakes but when I pushed down my car would make a sound and my foot would sink in but no break. I basically couldn't brake as fast as I'd like and almost hit a can within inches. There were noises coming from the front of the car at the same time.

I'm kind of still in shock. When I drove on flat roads I could brake quite easily.

Any idea what happened ? This happened twice when I tried to replicate it going down the ramp again a while later.

Yes, check everything in the system. Whether you do it yourself or have someone else do it, it all needs to be gone through.

^this. Check the whole setup, if it's out of your league, go to shop. A few guys on here might know what's up but if that's in your daily drive, I suggest going to a shop asap.

Since it happens on an incline, you may be extremely low on brake fluid. But if you are low on fluid, the red brake light in the instrument cluster should be on.

The noise is called ABS, slow down on wet roads.
What condition are you tire in?

I think njmaxseltd is correct. If you've never experienced an ABS system engaging then it can come as quite a shock. Try the ramp test again when the roads dry out and see if it's normal again.

Yes and is your ABS light on? If so, the ABS system is disabled if a sensor is malfunctioning. Also, I would hope that you stopped by using your e-brake or is that not working also?
