Won't start, only clicks sometimes.

This is not my Maxima, but my Dad's. I was hoping someone would be kind enough to help me out. Thanks.

Symptoms include:

The starter will only do a single "ting/click" if I turn the key and wiggle it in the right spot.

The car has started more than once now after sitting for a day or so.

I changed the starter and it is still doing the same things mentioned above.

My next thought is the ignition switch, but I don't get why it is starting after sitting for 24-48 hours. It will turn over on the first turn over and start on the first attempt but not after that. Any help would be really good. Thanks.

did you test the battery? How are the terminals on the battery? Does your battery require water? Usually clicking means lack of voltage and usually this is because of a bad battery

+1 Check your grounds from the battery. Follow the Neg wire and you will see where it bolts to the frame. Check that spot and clean it up and go from there. My second thought when you said you have to wiggle the key is the ignition switch.

Alright. The battery is brand new because my pops bought it right when it started this. The terminals I will admit are not that great, but I have played with them quite a bit. I did look at the ground and that might be the issue, possibly. If it's not the ground where should I look next?

The battery does not require water.

ignition switch likely. It is easy to clean up the grounds so do that and if it doesnt start with your new battery then likely you will need a new ignition switch which is not terribly hard to install yourself

I'll buy a switch today and see if that works.

this might need some clarification. but you might want to check to see if you have the "Slop" problem. Just yesterday Dennis posted a good explanation of the slop issue. My only concern is will the slop issue cause the "click"? You could save a bit there without having to buy a new switch entirely.

Ended up being a bad battery connection, and the ignition switch is going to be replaced as well since it only engages once in a while. Thanks.
