mixing atf fluids?(posted allready in fluid/lube with no rely)
i have a 98 gle with 100k and since the car was maintained very well from the previous 1 owner i wanna keep that going...anyway i wanna do a drain and fill on the tranny, the question i have is looking in the maintainance logs i notice they have dexron III written in the book so im assuming thats whats in the car. ive been reading alot of the forums on tranny fluid and from what you guys say synthetic is the way to go, i wanna put in the best that i can, so doing a drain and fill would putting in synthetic atf, in with the remaining dexron III be ok or would it be better to keep whats allready in it? oh and just to let you know the tranny fluid still looks nice and fresh , i just wanna do it and know its done for piece of mind ...should dex III and syth. be mixed? thanks guys!!!

i dont hook up a ATF machine to flush any automatic vehicles i own (dont like it), so all i usually do is dump the trans pan, change the filter, stitch it up again, and replace the 3-4 liters of fluid lost from that. drive it for a month or two, then repeat, replace the laost fluid, repeat again in a couple months. that way you for the most part have new fluid in the system. alot easier after the initial time if theres a drain plug on the pan, otherwise you have to dump the pan and stitch it up again every time
Dexron III trans fluids should mix, i know its law for brake fluid that all brands must be able to intermix so im sure its similar for trans fluids. just when you keep replacing the fluid, stick to the same brand/fluid

i used Royal Purple ATF in my 3rd gen, fixed alot of weird problems the trans had. afterwards i lent the car to a guy for tests afterwards and it showed the transmission was indeed shifting better.

I used RP in my SS and Vette and the cars always felt smoother. Everyone always told me I was crazy, but I believe in that stuff. I would've recommended it, but to be it honest, it slipped my mind completely. Good stuff for sure.

I dont have an AT, nor do i have a preference. Personally i dont think anyone needs RP, Amzoil, or redline. If they really are better, they are more than anyone really needs, short of racing.

Royal Purple does make a difference. like i said, my trans was acting wonky around 400,000km (shifted a bit hard, clunked going into drive, etc). the trans was completely drained and filled with RP and i voluntarily lent my car for tests to be run for 2 days that showed it was indeed shifting better. the clunks went away, no more jerky shifting, and the trans went to 429,000km before 1st gear started to slip
with stickshifts, same thing. my Hardbodies trans was notchy from worn synchros, filled it with Redline MT90 and all the synchro problems went away
