1998 Jetta VR6 (5-speed) vs. 1996 Maxi SE (5-speed)

Ok...ok... I know that stock vs. stock my Maxi can take this guy easy. Here's the story. My buddy ALWAYS made fun of me because I take good care of my Japanese honey and enjoy putting little aftermarket parts on her while he was driving a 1988 Buick Century. So he's enjoying this new car and said he's gonna go all out on it...bodykit, 18" wheels, turbo, everything. My question is...at what point should I not drag this guy when he starts putting mods on it? I know when he goes turbo, I'm not going to contest him. Because NA vs. turbo is unfair. In addition to all that is listed below, I will also have a Y-pipe and STS in a month or two. With similar bolt-ons, can he have any hope of taking me? Do the chips do as much for the VR6's as they do for the 1.8T's? Thanks.

The chips work alot better for everyone but us. You should be able to take him anyday until the turbo get in. Then depending on how he sets it up you could still take him with some no2. Remember it take some time for the turbo to spool, so you will have the advantage at times. But straight up with turbo you might not win sorry

Ok. Thanks. I'll let you know how it goes when I drag him in the spring.

I have alot of experience against VR6s, I know tons of VW guys. Just like Maximas, there are VR6s that have run 14s stock. I raced one with intake, exhaust and ECU and we were absolutely dead even, the closest race I've ever had. Looking over at his car was kindof like looking at a mirror, neither of us was going anywhere. They respond very well to mods, just like the VQ does. It should be a very close race assuming your have similar driving skills.

With basic bolt ons for the both of you, the races should be close, once he starts doing things like cams and such, you might start having problems. If he's going turbo though, you probably won't have to worry about cams, because he'll need a specific cam profile and ECU tuning that won't work when he's N/A, so he won't be getting cams and ECU until he goes turbo unless he has alot of money to burn.

Yeah. He was telling me about it...how bad@ss it was. I was like, yeah right. Then he showed me the website (can't remember the address). Sure enough there it was. A turbo kit with all the goodies and also including exhaust and intake costs around 6K-6500 for the 1998 VR6's. The site says it puts the Jetta at 330HP. I thought to myself I know if I put in a supercharger with all my other goodies and some more, it would total around $6K and be just as fast. But that's his choice. I don't think I'm going to put that much $$$ in my Maxi unless I come across a few grand for a supercharger.

Well, supercharging means changing some stuff around under the hood and I'm not totally sure I want to alter my baby that much yet. After a couple more bolt on mods, supercharging will be the next option and I'll consider it then. Plus he has more disposable income since his mommy and daddy help him out and I work for all of my stuff.

It wasn't a lack of confidence in my Maxima. It's just that I have not ever driven a VR6 and was wondering what everyone knew about them.

EIP Tuning has a turbo kit for VR6s. Don't mess with an EIP turbo'd VR6, they will rock every maxima on the road, with a few notable exceptions.
