Identifying an SE

Boy, did I have a time of it! I just got home with my "new" '95 Maxima 5 speed. Seller told me it was an SE, but how can I tell? It does not have any badges. The model designation on the title says "MAXIMAGGS" which I suspect is a misprint. When I give the vin # to a Nissan dealer, he checks it out as an SE, but how do you tell?

easy way is to check if your gauges are white faced, as oppose to black on gxe/gle. Also you can look at the wheels and i think se's have spoilers

Never. The FAQ might as well not exist.

To ID an SE: Look at the silver tag on the passenger side of the firewall behind ur engine. Look at the line under ur VIN. If the 6th letter is V then U have an SE, my friend. IF not, it's a GLE or GXE - read the FAQs for fuller description.

No... the first thing I look for is a FAQ too. I mean, who wants to look like an idiot?

What the ... is a "stickies"? Come on, give me a chance. I'd like to decode my VIN. What's the identifying code for a '95 SE?

Check the thread titled "4th gen FAQs" up top. It has the word "Important" in front of it.

Stickies are the thread with the word "Important" in front of them.

I'm not sure if the 95's are same as 96's for everything, but as for the 96 SE's, they all have a rear spoiler, foglights, white guages, plus the SE wheels.

I can add a spoiler, foglights, white face gauges and SE wheels to my GXE ... does it make it a SE then?

The ONLY POSTIVE way to tell is to decode your VIN number.

With so many custom gauges available on the market its easy to fool the uninformed buyer.

O.K. I have gone to the "faq" section and to the "important '4th gen.faq" thread. I did this before. There is nothing in those frequently asked question answers that gives assistance in decoding a vin for an '95 SE. Would one of you inscrutable orientals be so kind as to simply tell me: WHAT IS THE VIN CODE FOR AN SE!

That's true. But why would someone go to the trouble of buying the SE rims when for the same if not cheaper they can get larger and better looking wheels?

My bad... and I truely apologize... but it's in the "4th gen Maintenance Items" thread.

And Scruit already posted up how to decode the VIN. Look further up the thread.

I agree that's the only way to identify if it's a real SE or a one modified into "SE". In another word, on an true SE, one can delete spoiler, foglights, change white face gauge to black, change wheels to GXE or GLE, chrome the black trim, etc., but it still has the SE origin... Maybe nobody would do it. One thing is a little hard to do: take the SE's electronically controled liquid engine mount (standard on auto SE and GLE) out and put in the GXE type mounting.

Not that much more info ... it's just how the software is set up I suppose. Besides, I think "Important" makes it sound a little more "important" than plain "sticky".

aside from the factory foglights, spoiler, white guages, and fivestars- the SE has body colored doorhandles and grille plus the window molding is black, not chrome. Unless a GXE or GLE owner went to some great lengths, this should clear it up. ALso the SE has a different "sport" cloth pattern to the seats.
