What oil to use?

Het guys and gals! My name is Aaron and i'm new to Maxima.org. This might be covered already but my 97 maxima has 122k on it and I was wondering am I okay to stick with 5w-30? I plan on using Castrol high mileage.

5-30. 10-30, some run 0-whatever synthetics. Castrol GTX is great oil. I don't believe in high mileage crap. It's just good marketing.

You'll get a ton of opinions on oil. Just use what you want and change it every 3-4K miles and the VQ will do upwards of 300K miles without any mechanical issues.

Thanks! I bought the max from a guy that said he couldn't remember the last time he changed it. He said it pretty much has been sitting the past 3 years. But he would drive it at least twice a week. Also, the transmission fluid was very low so I had to ad some. Overall the vehicle is in good shape.

I've always been a fan of full synthetics. All my vehicles have had them.

I like Mobile 1 and Castrol. I used Royal Purple on my performance cars.

Njmax said it best though.

Mobil 1 Synthetic with Mobil 1 filters, 8-10k intervals here.

If you want to get your head spinning about it,

Usually the high mileage stuff is like $2 more. I've been using 5w-30 conventional and its good (10w-30 if you have oil leaks) as for a maxima, there is no need for synthetic IMO, but I really don't like the idea of running synthetic on a motor with 100k + miles that's used to regular. Start synthetic. End synthetic. Just my 2¢

+1

I do 10k to 15k intervals ever since I was at 83k and now I'm at 358k.

This is what I've been using lately. My 95 Maxima has 183K miles mostly on Syntech and it still runs very smooth 18 years later. Almost anything you use will be an excellent alternative to not changing it on a regular basis, but if you are using synthetic, you don't have to do that as often. -pc

I bought my 1996 Max with 100k on it. I bought it at a dealer. I noticed it had a couple of parts store receipts for Mobile 1 synthetic. I have continued to use Mobile 1 synth, or O'Riellys full synth. I use a good Wix or Mobile 1 filter. I change oil at 8-10k.

My car has 190k miles on it now. I add a quart every 4-5 k miles.

Sure, I could use regular oil and change it more often. I would rather use synth and not change as often. Personal preference. Synthetic is the logical choice in an area with cold winters or hot summers. Florida..... hot summers.

oil

My 98 gle has never missed a 3 k oil change ever and was allways top quality name brand oils(pennoil, castrol etc.) but just cuz it was on sale at wal mart the las time i put in some pennzoil high milage(even tho 100k isnt really that much) but i read somewhere (not sure if its bs) that along with more detergent in high mileage oil there is also some kinda gasket/o ring conditioner in it, so if it does have the gasket conditioner in it , it couldnt hurt to use it in my 98...after all every seal iN my motor is getting up ther in actual age...(not so much up ther in miles 100k) so from now on every time i do an oil change im going with 3 quarts regular oil and 2 courts high mileage....figure id give that a try!
