No spare lying around? If not, you could call a locksmith, or get a copy of the key made at a dealership. For the dealer copy, you would need the VIN # and proof of ownership I think. I can't see the old coat hanger trick working on this car.

How do you NOT have a spare key at your home

Jaysus.

I would get it towed to either your home or to a Nissan dealer who will probably help you out somehow, you have the title and registration?

When the car was originally sold as new before 1998, you may not be able to get a key made at the dealer. Before 1998, Nissan did not require the dealers to keep key numbers. Some dealers did keep numbers, but the information was not shared with other dealers. In 1998, Nissan started keeping a database of these numbers, requiring all the dealers to enter the key numbers, but this also allowed any dealer to get the number.

Good luck.

Even if dealer does not have the key code, they can get it online from Nissan. I was a Service Advisor for a Nissan dealership, and have done it before.

Not if the car was sold new before 1998. The Nissan database was implemented in late 1997. There may be some 1997 models in the database, but not a lot.

My 1997 is not in there. That's what got me to research this.

Local locksmiths can make a key. They have a device that they put in the lock cylinder to "read" the tumblers. This is what I had done for my car. Take the glove box lock out and take it to a locksmith. I doubt if you'll be asked any questions.

I don't think you need to have the key programmed if it's not a 99. They just come with standard keys.

So let's get this straight...

You bought a car with no title, didn't make a spare, and now have to pay 95+ for a new key and to go make a spare. And now you wanna 3.5 swap...? I pray you buy the right engine at least -.-

I have a strong feeling something else will crop up and suck your refund dry before that happens.

That price sounds pretty high if you are taking the glove box lock to him. If he's coming to your car to it, it's probably an OK price.

Just for grins and giggles, call another locksmith for a second opinion.

I only paid $27 to get keys made by giving the locksmith the key cylinder from my son's Jeep Wrangler.
