Auto Trans Fluid 1996 GXE

Anybody know the type of Automatic Tranny Fluid for a 96 GXE? What brands sell this? Is the same fluid used in a new 2002 SE Auto?

Thanks

For 4th and 5th gen automatics, Nissan recommends Dextron III or equivalent. Every auto store sells Dextron III fluid..no need to buy from Nissan dealer.

If you change your fluid (drain and refill) every 15k, then normal ATF is good. But if you want to extend the service intervals, say drain and refill every 30k, some people recommend synthetic ATF. I use Redline D4 ATF (dextron III equivalent) and have had good results. Don't expect a noticable improvement in shift quality though from synthetics, just extended change intervals. Make sure you look for Redline D4 ATF, not normal Redline ATF which is only Dextron IIE equivalent.

Other good ATF's are the Valvoline Synthblend and Maxlife. The transmission will work better (faster, smoother shifts and cooler running) if you add a bottle (the red one) of Lubeguard. It's available at NAPA stores and direct from the company. It takes a day or two of driving for it to do its thing.

OK, it may be time for me to change the fluid, but if I just drop the pan, that is only a couple of quarts, the tranny holds around 12 quarts, any ideas in flushing it out without taking it to a dealer or shop?

Simplest method is to do three drain and refills...should clean up most of the fluid in there. The transmission actually holds around 10 quarts total.

Disconnect the return line from the cooler to the trans, start the engine, pump out 2 qts, refill, repeat until fluid coming out is clean and bright red. Top off as needed when the trans comes up to operating temp.
