Should I become a cop ?
This isnt the best place for advice but what the hell.
Im in college now for culinary and I'm think of leaving and going to regular college for criminal justice then going to the acadamy. Id enjoy being a traffic cop alot but I dont know ??.. I dont think I want to be a chef the rest of my life...
Any cops out there with some words of wisdom ?

If youre going to be a cop, then i have just one request. PLEASE dont become a cop in a small city. you will be spending all your time chasing after teenagers who arent really doing anything wrong. Be a cop in a large city, where there is actual crime and an actual use for police officers.

I love unmarked cars in this country - they're mostly un-liveried (is that even a word?) versions of the local PDs main patrol vehicle. Back home they use anything they can get their hands on. I'm sure you'll find an unmarked Maxima patrolling the motorways somewhere...
Actually, the Maxima would be a good choice for unmarked police vehicle in one respect - the lack of spark plug wires, distrubutor nd the use of the BCM/LCM multiplexors means that radio equipment can be added with abslutely zero electrical or radio interference. That's a big problem, on Ford vehicles. I wonder if you could retrofit the coil-per-cylinder setup to another vehicle...?
The local city PD around these parts is advertising for new cops. $35k for 4mo, and then $52k after than. I would go for that except for 3 reasons;
1) Gotta be a citizen. No limeys.
2) Criminals have guns and they will shoot you. I don't want to get my bollocks shot off.
3) Software Engineering pays 2x-3x more than that.

I'm a Police Officer, and I love my job. I have been an Officer for close to 8 years now. The pay needs to be higher, but depending on your location and education level that has improved as well. In fact a lot of agencies prefer at least a two year degree now. Those agencies usually start out higher.
I was going to attend College to become a Meteoroligist orginally, but the cost of attending was astronomical. I decided on following my childhood fantasy, after my time in the Army was up, and I worked my way up to becoming a Police Officer in my current dept. I was a Telecommunications Technician, (telephone systems, VHF, Microwave, etc.), while I was in the Army, but got bored with it.
I haven't become bored with being a Police Officer yet. You may however find that you become less trusting in this line of work. You also tend to hone your b.s. alert skills.
It depends on what you want out of your career though. I chose mine not for pay, obviously, but for job satisfaction. I like being able to contribute to the community. You can always supplement your income with off-duty work as well. As you gain experience your pay will increase and other agencies will be willing to start you off at a much higher pay, than if you were still a rookie, if you decide to leave for another agency.

Re: Should I become a cop ?
I spent most of college studying CS, but after a few years of working in industry, I find myself losing interest. Not altogether...I still love all things techie, but I can't see myself doing this for the next 30+ years of my life. Soooo, on to law school for me. If I spend 5 years as a lawyer and end up hating it, so be it...on to skydive instructor ...etc, etc.
Point is, if you're one of those fortunate few who know exactly what they want to do with their life and have a fair amount of it planned out for the next, say, 40 years and being a traffic cop happens to be part of that plan, then go for it. If you're not that type of person, then I say do it anyway. You'll try, either love it or hate it, and you'll live and learn. Whatever happens, don't settle.

bro
what happened to Computer Science?
anyways, I wouldn't want to be a cop.. I give respect to those who do it, do it well and like it. I wanted to do a double major, with CS and Finance before, but even though both make $, I don't feel like counting $ as a career, now I'm thinking of going into Engineering of some sort, environmental or electrical.. not sure yet.

He wouldn't, because I wouldn't go that fast.
I have been to one Maxima.org meet already.
We also had a mini meet at the drag strip a week later.
I will gladly run flat out on a track, but not on the street.
