Max rides like an empty dump truck

Hello everyone,

I have a question. If I already have new struts, what else would make my maxima ride soo rough?

Thank you guys for any help. Oh, and Merry Christmas!

What brand did you go with?

Is the rest of your suspension up to par?

Monroe is the brand. When I got those put in, it didn't make a difference at all. I also had both lower control arms put in at that time as well.

As far as the rest of the suspension... I have to admit I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to that subject .

Were the struts tightened correctly?

Is it the rear or the front? More noise or feeling?

Were they the Monroe quick struts? (All in one) or just the shocks?

Might be a stretch but perhaps it feels so stiff because you were riding on really old, worn out struts previously? Replacing old OEM struts with new OEM struts can be a big difference, let alone swapping in aftermarket.

Are they the Monroe Blue struts? If so, that's why it rides like a dump truck.
I had them for about a year, the ride was less than desirable.

I'm going to have to wait till tomorrow to ask my mechanic exactly what kind of Monroe's I have. The receipt does not specify which kind.

Also, besides the struts, are there any other culprits I should look out for?
Deathwobble asked if my springs are the originals, and they are. So I guess that is one culprit. I also have to assume my mechanic tightened them correctly, but I will still ask him.

Just to give you guys an idea of how harsh the ride is. When I run over those painted white lines at a red light, it feels like railroad tracks.

Thanks again guys for taking your time to respond.

Have you checked the tire pressure?

If its that bad id say it is more than likely the struts themselves. In my limited knowledge i dont think anything else can cause a harsh ride like that.

I had the same problem (after changing out struts) to find out I had to replace also:

Tie Rods
Lower Control Arm
Sway Bars

Go on online and you can get the above and more for under $200

.....these are all part of the suspension system, and will go bad. Have mechanic / alignment shop check them parts also....

Good thing is: I replaced the parts myself (thanks to Youtube vids)

Give you're front end a nice bouce its suppose to just bounce once on new struts.
If it don't oe too much its your spring rate too high.
Our max's already come pretty loose from factory. Gxe model has the softer springs over the se. Could be the moroe brand. ?

Did you change your swaybar links? If it's clunking over bumps giving you noise that's giving you the feeling that it's sounding like a dump truck i'd think about doing your swaybar links aswell.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I have Monroe Sensa-Tracks.

Its just kind of strange to me that it rides just as same as it did with the old struts. It rides equally rough in the front or back of the car.

Thanks to all you guys for taking the time to help a noob out. And have a good and safe New Years Eve.

Those sensa-tracks should ride good. I think you need to really inspect your suspension for anything else that may need replacement. Check your tire pressure too. 32-35 max COLD.

How long have you had this vehicle? Did it ride the way you want it in the past? It looks like you have an SE, they generally ride pretty firm at least compared to the other models. If you install new struts and springs the ride will probably just be that much firmer.

There is nothing wrong about a firm ride. The maxima is a "sport sedan", not a cadillac. I prefer a stiff ride and road feel.

Something isn't right. Maybe something in the suspension is binding. Even my car with Tokico Blues in the front and Illuminas in the rear doesn't ride that hard. I'm on H&R springs also.

Is it possible that bad motor mounts could cause this?

Same issue here. Running over those little lights in the road it feels like my car is going to fall apart. Replaced every part of the suspension I can think of and same thing is still happening. I'm wondering if it may be the tires themselves even tho they are all fairly new.
