4th gen engine stumble at 35 -4000 rpm
'97 stock motor except K & N filter, 5 spd, 178,000 miles. About 90% of the time the engine stumbles as it accelerates through 3500+ til about 4K rpm. Seems to happen less in cooler (Florida car) or even 30* weather ( NC ). I can usually push through it and then accel ok to high rpm. Happens in all gears including 5th. Car was run on low octane gas for years. Tried prem gas and the problem actually got worse. Better when went back to 87 oct. I would love to give you any codes, but the car will not give 'em up. My reader says it's unable to read them. I've never seen the MIL so I suspect it's burnt out. I think it runs OK other than that. 10,000 miles and has not changed. Get 24 -25 mpg at about 3500 rpm highway cruise. I haven't been able to find a similar enough post so here is my own. Thanks.

If you have a Chilton or Hayes manual, or maybe fsm download somewhere, there is a schematic for the obd2 port. Check the correct wire for positive to make sure you have juice, then there is a data wire that runs to the ecu. Mine was shorted out, I could not read the ecu. Re ran a new wire and it worked like a champ. It should be something simple like that.
