I've tried to do a bunch of searching and a bit of reading and even went to the FSM.

However, I have, up to now been unsuccessful in locating the procedure for the removal and replacement of our transmission filter.

In shopping for the piece I ran across an advisory stating, "replacement of filter requires valve body removal."

So, instead of searching the FSM for the written procedure, I thought I'd have a look at the exploded graphics ... sure as sh*t.

So ... how complicated is getting to and pulling this thing so's a new one can go in?

there is not a "filter" per se...it's a screen, and is not intended for replacement.

There is no need to replace it. It's a screen as Ameri said. When I took mine out, I just cleaned it. There were some small metal shavings that I removed with some tweezers and place it back. Valve body removal is not required. When you removal the trans. pan you will see the screen held by a screw or two.

So apparently that graphic, which is right out of the FSM, shows the valve body/screen assembly inverted?

That graphic is upside down. The permanent metal screen is bolted onto the bottom side of the VB.

some had to remove the valve body because the screw in the middle sometimes had to be held on the other end. another thing to note you should clean out the little screens on the shift and t/c solenoids. this actually caused drivability problems for my dads car where he thought the trans was gone. but we...well i replaced the shift solenoid kit and filter and shes still rolling at 200k

This is correct but on my 95 didn't have a problem removing the middle screw. Wish I knew about the small screens on the shift solenoids...

This is one of the main reasons why the trannies go out.
