Manual Transmission Fluid Recommendations?

Hi, just finished up a clutch job for my '98 Maxima SE and just wanted to ask your recommendations on which tranny fluid I should fill back up with? Thanks!

You have to use gl4 because of the brass synchros. If you use newer stuff like gl5 it'll make them disappear. I used amsoil gl4 synthetic. It was not cheap but this is where you want to spend money. This old 5spd uses a lot of fluid. I spent about $75 because it's about $10-$15 a quart from bruces speed shop. When I drained mine it was 1.6qts low so I'm glad I did a service when I bought the car.

Topping off is not needed, since the transmission will not burn oil like an engine does.

Just like an engine though, they might leak. Not checking fluid levels for four years is just fine, until it isn't. Once most of the oil has leaked out, the transmission bearings will start to destroy themselves.

+1 to MT90. Your transmission will love it.

With a previous 95 model 5-speed I used a GL4 from Napa named Sta Lube. No complaints for the price.
