Bose Tweeter Replacement question

Hi guys,
Hope all you Northerners are enjoying the not-so-crappy weather we've been having. I'm quite impressed by the stock system on my 1997 I30, but the tweeters seem to be the weak point and often crackle and distort. Sonic Electronix has some pretty great deals for replacement tweeters ($30 for a pair with good reviews, I don't need anything fancy). However, I know the Bose speakers have amps associated with them. Is it the same for the tweeters, or can I simply replace the Bose ones straight up with aftermarket ones and not worry about connecting them to an amp? They would be 4 ohm, correct? Thanks in advance!

Your answer may be buried in there. From my quick search, it seems they are 4 Ohm.

Check these out too

I know the feeling. I bought some and mounted them in the same spot where my oem one was.
And now you can hear them loud and clear.
Also this (believe it or not) it actually improve your stereo imaging.

When I enhanced my Bose system, I was going to upgrade my tweeters later, if needed, because I shared the same feeling as you.

My setup became a Clarion double DIN HU-->Audiolink PD4--> OEM Bose Amps and speakers.

The key was the Audiolink unit that provided a high quality interface between the aftermarket head unit and the stock Bose amps/speakers. The PD4 was a bit of a pricey line level converter back in the day. $150 for it whereas all the others were $50. Unfortunately Audiolink eventually went out of business.

The sound of the system improved beyond words. There was no additional power, but sound quality went way up, and the stock tweeters really started singing. Bass was tighter, imaging stronger etc. This led me to conclude that the weakness that was sensed in the tweeters was really inside the oem bose head unit, and that the OEM head unit had ALOT of weaknesses.

I lost the ability to install a 6 disc CD changer, but that was replaced with connecting an iPod thru USB. So going froma 6 disc changer to the equivalent of a 1000 disc changer was a not too shabby upgrade at all.

Given the options available today, I would suggest replacing the head unit before the tweeters to improve the sound.

If you are going to do a aftermarket tweeter make sure they either come with a crossover cause factory amp on the radio will play bass thru them and proof" no more tweeter

Uh...are you sure.
Cause my 99 i30 actually has separate wiring coming from the amp.
I know 97 are parallel with the speakers.

Its weird though cause it sounds as if the tweeter, when the treble was at the max, it seemed like it was being pushed to much.

As for bass the stock system was decent for what it was.
So I took care of that with a bose 10" sub in a compact box powered with bose sub amp and it hits!
