The lock button has stopped working on my remote. The other buttons are still working fine. Is this cleanable, repairable, etc?

Also, I have another junkyard sourced remote. Can I program this myself to work with this car, or do I need a dealer involved? Car is a 1998.

You can try to open and check what the problem is.
Might be toast.

No dealer needed for reprogramming a new remote.
I'll seach the procedure for you, but iirc off the top of my head you:

1. Unlock then lock all doors with the master switch on the drivers side making sure all doors are closed first.

2. Fully insert and remove the key from the ignition until you see your parking lights flash. Once it flashes your in program mode.

3. I'm a little hazy on this one..I think you turn the key to accessory then use the master button to unlock and lock all doors again and then press the lock button on the remote within 10 seconds of all the above.

It will confirm you've successfully programmed by flashing the parking lights when you use the lock button on the remote.

If you want to program more than one remote you just use the master switch to unlock and then lock all doors again and hit that remote's lock button.

Here is ID cODe entry procedure from 1998 FSM maybe it will be of help.

PROCEDURE
Close all doors and lock all doors.
Insert and remove the key from the ignition key cylinder more than six times within
10 seconds. (The hazard warning lamp will then flash.)
Turn ignition key switch to “ACC” position.
Push any button on the new remote controller once. (The hazard warning lamp will
then flash.)
At this time, the new ID code is entered and original (previous) ID codes are
erased.

This seems to say that it will erase all the remotes? So I have to reprogram them all when I do it?

Also: Any clues on opening the bad remote? I'd prefer not to damage it in the process of experimentation (not that I've ever done that to a component before, nope, not me :-)

 

That's correct, you will need to reprogram.

There is a high probability of breaking the case when you take it apart considering it's probably 15 years old and held together by plastic tabs.
You would just need to get a small flathead and pray..I mean pry.

When you open up the case of the remote, lift out the printed circuit board. On the other side a small switches that are the buttons. This side usually has a lot of gunk built up on it as well as in the rubber membrane. Use isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol to clean. You should be able to hear the little switches click when you press them.

To program the remote(s) follow this procedure.

1. Unlock all doors and get in car.

2. Close and lock all doors with power door lock switch on driver's door.

3. Insert the igniton key and completely remove from the ignition switch
at least 6 times within 10 seconds. The hazard warning lamps (both turn
signals) will then flash twice and all previous codes will be cleared.

4. Turn ignition key to "ACC" position.

5. Push the "Lock" button on the new remote controller once. At this time,
the car learns the new ID code. The hazard warning lamps (both turn
signals) will then flash twice.

If you are programming just one remote, go to step 10.
If you need to activate additional remote controllers, continue with Step 6.

6. Manually unlock the driver's door only then lock again with door lock
****.

7. Push lock button on the additional remote controller once.

8. Hazard warning lamps (both turn signals) will then flash twice and
additional remote is programmed.

9. For additional remotes, go back to step 6.

10. When done, open the driver's door to exit programming state.


NOTE: A maximum of 4 remotes can be programmed to any ONE car.

 

Yep, no need to go to the dealer for it. Steps outlined above work perfectly...That is, if you have keyless entry to begin with. If not, you may spend about an hour sitting in the car on a 100f summer day, fighting with the procedure before it dawns on you that the car may not even have the keyless module. Then you may ask yourself why you didn't check this out before purchasing a new OEM remote. Luckily, this forum exists and you may be able to sell the remote to Fakie J Farkerton in the classifieds, rather than admiring a pocket sized paperweight. Thanks Fakie!
