Starting the Max... engine is just running, then I hear a grunt/growl, almost sounds like a starter not disengaging or a little when you crank a car that's already running. Lasts a second of two. Cold starts only.

Seems a little late for the starter not withdrawing. But it could be. Anything else on a Max that typically makes this noise?

How much of a PITA is changing the starter? Multi-hour job with stuff in the way, or in and out in an hour?

"IF" it is the starter its a pretty straight forward job...i pulled the intake duct out and if i remember, its 2 long bolts.....pretty easy....good luck!!

 

starter removal is pretty easy. need to remove the airbox to get to it.

 

I have had this prob on my car and seen it on several other cars, it's not a significant prob therefore just leave it as is, I would not touch it since your starter is still working,

 

If I want to "feel" the starter to tell if that's the problem, can I reach it from above to get a hand on it? Pull the airbox maybe?

 

Also... if I decide to replace it, any preferred brands? Are any of the chain store items like Autozone any good? I'm going to be under the gun to do this if I do it... no time to wait for an order to arrive.

 

I have used Advance Auto rebuilt with the TRT41 or TRT30 coupon code. I have found new starters from China to hang after starting.

 

Yes, I have had 3 NEW made in China starters. The 3rd knock on wood operates just fine, except the field wire began cracking. I wrapped it with electrical tape. It's unfortunate how much junk is for sale today. Lifetime warranty yes, but you have to triple your labor. Someone told me should have rebuilt the original myself. Of course I'm the original owner, otherwise likely there is a junk replacement in there already....

 

If the starter still works, it is likely better than any reman you will get. Pull it and clean/regrease. Use a little motor oil in the bendix as well. It is a fun DIY.

Not a bad idea... if I can handle the downtime, I might do that.

 

Just an FYI Nissan had 4 different model starters for the 4th Gen. If you use the older design, theres a grinding sound, which I got from an old pep boys unit I bought. After getting an updated Bosch Unit, it was perfect.

 

Good to know... I did see the Bosch and it was a about $50 more. But, if it's actually a better (re) built unit, that's worth it.

 

I have only heard that noise on aftermarket starters from AZ especially...try an OEM.
