Timing chain tensioners

I have a ticking sound coming from my 95 Max and I think its the timing chain. I think the tensioners are worn are something. Is there any way to tighten up the tensioners, because I think the timing chain is rubbing causing the ticking noise I hear. If any of you know about how much this repair will cost and is it a pain in the a**?

Could be a sticky lifter. No they can't be adjusted as they are self adjusting. only way to check is to take the cover off and see how much meat is left on the tensioner guides. cost is not cheap but the part itself is not bad. probably about $300 or so?? Maybe $400. It's alot of labor to get to the tensioners. So make sure they are what's wrong first.

Are these a pain to get to and replace, that may be it being I have 125,000 miles. Mostly highway(driving from Va to Louisiana)

Re: Tensioner guides

Well, I would try to find a way to check them first. Maybe there is an access hole that allows you to peer inside the front chain area. If not, then you might have to get an expert opinion(whatever that is)

I'm not sure about this, but, I think all Max engines sound like they tick-- a little. I had a 88 Camry, and it sounded like that too. I had that from 36k miles to 176k miles, and it always sounded like it had a little tick to it. But, if seems like it's really loud, well, maybe there is something wrong.

I think all 4-cyl Camrys sound like that. It isn't the timing chain tensioner in the Camry since Camry's have timing belts. One thing I noticed about the 87-91 Camry's is that the engine is whisper quiet, except for that ticking noise! It's like the car isn't on, except for that odd ticking noise, which kind of gives the car character.

The four cylinder Toyota engine is to four cylinders as the Nissan six is to six cylinders. A great engine. Not much for horsepower, but they are bulletproof. Hell, it was the same basic block design they used in the Gurney Toyota GTP cars back in the eighties. Imagine, 750hp+ from a four cylinder!

Jeff our cars have no lifters. We have a bucket and shim setup. You can adjust them, but it's not reccomended. It's a project. I have the same bucket and shim setup in my Yamaha. 15,000 mile check / adjust intervals. You need special tools to get the shims out of the buckets which sit under the rocker arms. You also need a special chart which tells you which shim size to get if your specs are out. I should take a picture some day on the setup in my bike and post it on here for you guys to see what it looks like. It's a very nice setup! Usually requiring no maintenance. (like our VQ's) The shims are made of a hardend metal and don't ware. Hance you don't have to adjust them.
