Recently I've had a strange battery drain that would leave the I30's new battery completely drained. So it turns out the brake lights were staying on after I would park the car. Go figure.

My first thought was that it would hopefully be the plastic brake switch bumper. I had to fix the clutch switch bumper on the first Maxima so I knew what to expect. Yep - sure enough it was a broken plastic bumper.

I didn't even need to look under the dash.

When the brake lights stay on, look on the floor mat around the brake pedal for some broken plastic parts like the ones in the picture below.

A few years ago, when I had to replace the clutch switch, I found a nylon fastener (basically screw with a large head) to cover the bumper opening while allowing me to use a metal washer and nut.

Ace Hardware carries nylon screws and nuts in the Hillman Fastener section. I picked up the items in the picture to replace the plastic bumper. I like to replace plastic bumpers with a nylon screw to prevent causing any metal-on-metal contact with switches.

Here's a picture of the brake light switch with the plastic bumper replacement. Sorry for the focus as I could not see the part when holding the camera.

A small carriage bolt is the perfect solution!
