To those with cut shifter....>>>

I cut my shifter today about two inches and put aftermarket handle which makes it even shorter. It took mad long to do it. Is it bad to cut it like that cause the shifter was moving all over? I was holding it with my hand in N and then in 4th gear. I hope there is nothing to break. I respect your work cause I was breaking sweat after it. At least my shifter feels closer to 02 maxima nice and stiff.

Can you shift?
Hear any grinding or other noises?

I know the feeling, Jeff K, one of his friends and I started with a dremel but that wasn't going to work so we went with elbow grease Anyway, you should be cool. I love the feeling of the shortened shifter too.

Its fine. It was a bit harder to switch but thats because I was cutting it for like 2h ours and couldnt lift my arm. I shift like a bat into 3rd now and I saved like 100 bucks.

The cut is way above the shift boot. I think the shaft sticks up like 3 or 4 inches above the boot if you just push it down a little.

How did you secure the ****?

Just curious - how did you go about threading the shift **** onto the freshly cut shift-shaft? Did you make new threads on the shortened shaft w/ a tap & die kit?

Thanks.

You just buy an aftermarket **** that uses set screws to secure it to the shifter. just wrap the shifter with some tape before putting the **** on to keep it from moving too much.

when i cut my shifter on my 95 SE i used lock cutters it ate through the metal in a heartbeat, i was sick of elbow grease cause it wasn't working at all. I don't wanna cut the shifter on my 97 for the sole reason that i will be getting an STS. Remember cutting the shifter may make it look shorter but still throws like a 5spd truck.
