Swapped ECU and inspection??

Hey all, i have a 95' fed spec ecu that ive been sitting on for a while and this question just crossed my mind - how does state inspection work when you have a different ecu than stock? Does the ECU have no effect on the process? Or do they then go by the inspection requirements of that ecu? Or is it a mix of both?

I have a 99 cali and live in NY if that makes a difference. Also the shop i go to doesnt care about what is done as long as there is no codes for the most part.

The last sentence you typed is how the emissions will go for you. As long as you have no codes you'll pass. On the 1996 and up cars just need a code free ecu and the 1995 and down cars need to hook the emissions test to the exhaust

So to clarify - it goes purely by VIN (therefore codes in my case) no matter what?

The only reason i am concerned is because the difference between 95-down vs. 96-up as you mentioned, and the fact that the plugin spot is different on 95 ECUs.

Thanks for the help.

Yes your correct. They won't check the year of the ecu. But do you know that 95 ecu won't be a direct ecu swap without modification? I just want to make sure you know

Thanks for the info, exactly what i need to know!

And yes i am aware, i am going to be following the info from this thread:

https://maxima.org/forums/4th-genera...p-success.html

As well as a handful of others for minor details like "how to repin". Unless im missing something not covered here? I know some people opt to replace the entire harness but im going to be slicing and dicing when i *finally* get around to installing an 00vi/VAFC2 in a month or so.
