I broke a stud that goes to the thermostat and need help removing it.

Just like the title says. I was replacing my 99 4th gen maxima thermostat and acidently snapped one of the 3 studs that come out from the engine in half. I can get my needle nose vice grips around it, but can not get it to unscrew at all.

I have used BP blaster on it, let it sit. But can not get it to budge.

I am looking to have someone verify that the stud is double threaded and goes in normal (righty tighty). So to remove it I should be treating it just like a normal bolt. (ie. trying to unscrew it counter clockwise).

Any help?

It's the lower front one. So it's pretty hard to see. I have to use a mirror to see it.

Thanks guys

I would slot it with a Dremel tool, and then try to back it out with a large screwdriver - after soaking it with PB Blaster for a number of hours. It should back out like a normal stud.

I did that last week. Yes they are double threaded turn counterclockwise to remove. If you have threads use a jam nut method to remove. Seemed easiest way. I hit the junk yard to grab another stud and the 98 I found had bolts instead....that's what I used in the one I broke

Another idea is to blast that sucker with some MAP gas or some oxygen/Acetylene gas.

If you find a salvage car with stud bolts that you can harvest to replace the broken one, I recall using a 5mm star pattern socket on the end of the stud for removal.

Since the stud is still there I would
1.Saturate it in penetrant as mentioned above.
2. get a nice pair of vice grips on it not a knock off and not an old worn pair then attempt to remove turning counter clockwise. If possible smack the end of the grips with hammer in same direction to shock it loose.
