I am having ignition switch problems on 97 Max

My key lock cylinder went out so I went & removed the ignition switch so I could use a flat head until fixing. After 2 months the plastic broke out so I couldn't start it.I used a screw driver panel popper that was wide enough 2 grip the walls enough so when I turned it was turning the car on, lights ect but I know I turned it past its original "off" & "on" position all around but managed 2 start it 1 last time on that switch. My windshield wipers wouldn't turn on, everything else worked fine. I arrived & put it in park, as soon as I did the starter engaged like it was spinning. So I quickly turned it off, went and got a new ignition switch & installed. All the functions work like normal in "on", but when I actually try and start the car it will not turn on.All my fuses are good.Removed my starter & got it tested, it passed. Reinstalled but does the same thing when I try to start it, nothing.Any suggestions on why it wont start or if anyone has had the same problem would be really helpful

Just to clarify, it won't turn on because the new ignition switch won't turn to "Start" position or it turns to "Start" position but engine won't start? If the latter, was starter spinning or you just got "click" or nothing at all?

the new ignition switch is fine it turns thru all the positions as it should so I was expecting an easy fix. Turns out its not, the switch works fine in on position but when I actually try to start it, it does nothing . As I mentioned all the fuses are good.

So when you turn the key to On position, does the dash all light up? Does the starter spin but engine won't start? Or if the starter does not spin, do you hear a click sound or nothing?

I would first check the batter voltage, if battery is good and but starter does not spin, turn key in On position and use a long screw driver to jump the starter solenoid to the positive terminal to see if starter spin. Starter might pass the bench test but can still be bad, more likely the starter solenoid could be bad.

Also, move your shifter back and forth few time and try to start again.
