I looked at my backseat, and I can pull it forward a little bit, like it is not hooked in corectly. I bought the car used, and he previous owner could have thought he/she could pull it down and soon found they couldn't. I don't know, it pulls away just enough to make me wonder if it could be done.

Actually, I don't think it is that hard to do....I don't recommend it though.
The rear seat back hooks over two slots, one on each end (at the top). There are four bolts securing the seat back - two in the arm rest and two on the extreme ends.
If you wanted to have a fold down seat, you could remove all the bolts and make a hinge for the seat back. You could possibly use deadlock bolts of some kind to secure the back in the upright position.
If you wanted a "full deck" then you would have to cut away the support in the middle ... this is the bit I would not recommend.
This is probably the only thing I do not like about the Maxima ... it's useful to have a fold down seat instead of that fold down armrest that opens into the trunk.

I'm not sure what you guys are talking about, but I removed my entire back seat in order to wire my stereo.
The back seat cushioning is attached in the way described above, but also the forged steel plate is removable.
How impossible is it to remove that steel pate and install the cusioning from a 5th gen? I don't think the steel plate does anything structually, except maybe for POSSIBLY (but not likely) safety reasons.
I think it's do-able with some work.

But there is the rest of it I suppose....You'd still have more of a hole than the ski hole anyway.

You guys have been great with the replies. Tommorow when there is a lil more light I am gonna take a good look at it. I would love to be able to fold down that seat. I may not though, definately before checking to see what the sheetmetal and other supports are for (I am sure they are there for a reason, just too bad it's upsetting most Max owners). With a lil more research and some careful inspections I may attempt it. Thanx again everyone..and keep em rolling!!

Ha, this brings back memories. One of the first questions I asked when I was a newbie. I got the same answers as you did: it will ruin the structure of the car. I have since removed my back seats and 'scoped'. Yes, there is stuff there but I was thinking it still might be doable. I haven't forgotten about it and it's still in my Palm's to-do list! I have just been so busy with other stuff (engine mods, body work, etc., etc.) I still plan on taking it further. But that might not be for some time - especially since my SC showed up today! I was thinking that perhaps a rear strut tower brace might make up for some lost support. What do you guys think about that thought?

Ha-ha. Yeah. It's funny. When I first got my Maxi. and then discovered the .org, I remember reading about this "SuperCharger" and to me it was like "Woooooow, no way". It was something that would be so cool to have but something, I myself, would never be able to get/have. It was just something 'you read about', something 'the other guy has'. But, here I am about exactly 2 years later with my own! I am really stoked. A little nervous ... but stoked.
But yeah, I think I am going to install it myself. Wish me luck!
Thanks.

Absoultely best of luck to you...SC is way out of my ballpark, as it was yours. We'll be anxious to see how you did with the installation. Again, best of luck, and we are all envious!!!!

Hey guys. I didn't mean to slam the brakes on this thread by mentioning the SC. I am actually very interested in the back seat folding down. Nobody answered my question regarding the rear strut tower brace. Everyone seems to agree that cutting away the metal will reduce the structural integrity of the car. Would installing a RSTB restore the lost support? Anybody else have any ideas/thought? I'm sure it can be done...
