I wrote a longer post and the Org logged me out and lost the post. I can't believe in 2014 this **** still happens.

Anyway, the short question: I want to replace the stock 4th gen fogs with aftermarket housings (stock housings are horrible and I've already been unsuccessful with a yellow bulb capsule retrofit). What is the best bang for the buck (and effort) to do this? I don't want to drop a lot of money or spend hours making something fit the stock brackets or electrical connectors.

After a little research, here are some ideas.
- Cheap eBay housing/projector and LED or HID kit
- Morimoto LED fog housings $160, not sure how much retrofitting would be required, and would have to add yellow film which would weaken output
- 3000K HID kit, but would need to find a housing that would be compatible
- Just do a HID retrofit to headlights (more $$ and work, probably not feasible for me)

I appreciate any recommendations.

If you're using your fogs all the time, you need better headlights. Fog lights should only be used in inclement weather. So I really think you need a headlight retrofit more than anything but here's another fog option made by a fellow 4th gen owner..

Thanks, guys. I did the 9007 headlight mod years ago and it made a big difference. On back roads in the dark I feel I have good visibility with low beams and especially high beams. However, I live in the Northwest where it rains all winter, and Interstate driving in rain with spray from other cars and a lot of oncoming headlights makes me feel a lot less confident about driving over 70 MPH. Hence why I think a good set of yellow fogs would make a lot of difference.

I have no doubt that HID projectors would improve my headlights significantly, but I'm not sure I can justify the cost and effort. Basically I'm willing to spend $300ish, so the question is what is the best improvement I can do for that price?

I was hoping for a plug and play option that would replace the stock fogs with something much better, for those rainy days and snowy mountain passes. Thanks for the link to the PC Nitrous fogs. Do you know if those are easy to mount to the stock 4th gen fog brackets?

 

97 headlight upgrade and morimoto mini h1. Simple to do and not costly. Light output is 100% better then original. Don't even need to use my fogs.

I use these small rectangular Pilot fog lamps. Bought them at Autozone last year, and has no problems at all. They cost me around $40 most. No condensation, no nothing. Wire harness usually got wet when it either snowed or rained but still is good. They fit the look of the 4th gen. This one has 7 color accent LEDs inside but I removed the wire for it as it is really not useful. Easy to wrap if you were to use yellow film. They use H3.

 

Thanks for the replies. Re the Morimoto Mini H1 kit, is there a write-up for how to install this in the 97-99 Maxima headlight? Can you tell me how much cutting, adjusting, gluing/JBwelding, drilling, painting, etc. is required to make them and the shrouds fit and look good?

I would love to see pics of your completed setup.
