96 maxima leaking coolant from behind the thermostat housing?

ok so i had a pretty bad leak i took a look seemed as if it was coming from the thermostat housing/gasket. so i ran down to napa grabbed a new thermostat housing and gasket. replaced them and i start her up add some fluid and nothing still leaking bad. i noticed that its coming from behind the thermostat where i cant see. my question is what is directly behind the damn thing?

It could be coming from the water pump weep hole. Check out this video to see if the issue described is similar to your problem.

no its from further up I just did the water pump and thermostat + gasket. the leak is coming from right behind the thermostat right after the gasket. my question is what is it that the thermostat bolts to? from there strangely I believe the leak is coming from.

The thermostat mounts onto cylinder head 2 (left cylinder head). The inner nut behind the tensioner rod probably isn't torqued enough. Were you able to reach that nut using swiveled wrenches? If not then to reach that nut you'll have to remove the tensioner rod, idler pulley, drive belt.......this thread shows that setup

https://maxima.org/forums/4th-genera...-assembly.html

You'll need to loosen the idler pulley nut first.

As noted on page LC-14 (engine lubrication & cooling systems) those nuts require only 6-8 ft-lbs. If you don't have the Factory Service Manuals (FSM) then click on the link under the post CS_AR made.

EDIT: Cover the alternator with a plastic bag to avoid coolant spilling on it.

Yea i had a better look its for sure coming from behind the thermostat. Its literally pouring out from behind there i think my cylinder head may be cracked. Don't know for sure i have to pull my ac+alternator to see where the leak is coming from.
