Tachometer inconsistant reading

So I noticed as I was test driving my 1995 before starting repair work that the tach needle is bouncing around like crazy and never shows the correct revs. I would like to fix this but also don't want to pull to whole dash out only to find it was not needed to fix this. Any advice would be great thanks!

The usual thing that should be done when these things go bad, the gauge clusters circuit board is bad or the tech is bad.I would pull out the cluster, check the board for burnt or shortage in the soldering on the circuit and replace if necessary. I would replace that than go from there,if you can check ohms and resistance on the part and harness first, than replace the tech. The best bet is just check it all out. I am positive that it should be the board.

Okay, how do I pull the gauge cluster out of a 4th gen? Remove the dash as usual? Or is it easier than this......

The dash has the cluster lid that has too crews in it. Stick your head near the cluster and look up in it that's where two screws that are hiding. Than pop the lid off than behind the lid there is two screws to the top and two to the bottom that are holding the cluster too the car, take that out you got the dash. The cluster comes out with the harness for the speedometer and the odometer and the tachometer, disconnect them all and the harness to the cluster lid with the cruise control and the dash light dimmer and brighter switch.

Wow, that was easy! Most cars you have to take the whole dash out to get the gauge cluster out! Thank ya!

I don't know, I just put a new cluster in lol! I'm going to have my local dealer set the mileage right once I'm back home. How much you think they will charge for this?

Yeah it's happy, I'm hoping that it won't break on me too lol! I had to use a scan tool gauge system to set up the IAC motor but now it has it's new gauge set installed.
