Replacing control arm
Replacing control arm
Well I have to replace the passenger side due from small power steer leak killed my bushing.. Any ways what is the best way to get it off the pivot rod I guess that what the call it.. Just unbolt it or is there way without removing part? Any tips thanks..
Between the 4th and 5th gen forums I'm sure there's a solid how-to, but I can tell you what I plan on doing. I've got Moog R-series in the box waiting to go on. I'm pretty excited. I'm waiting for the weather to warm up a little bit so I can throw some additional paint on them. It's probably not necessary but I live in northeast Ohio where salt is used excessively.
I think you'll have to remove the pivot rod eventually. There probably won't be enough play and you'd be fighting the ball joint to remove control arm with the rod attached.
Anyway what I think I'm going to do is as follows:
1. unscrew the nut on the front of the rod
2. unscrew the bolts on rod
3. use wood block and smack that rod out while the control arm is still attached (may have to loosen back bolts first to get some play)
4. unscrew ball joint nut as much as possible
5. unscrew two bolts in the back
At this point I hope it drops and I'll just have to finish the ball joint nut. If not I'll smack the spindle knuckle to free up ball joint.
Reassembly:
Hopefully by just cleaning up the arm where it pivots and adding grease (metal sleeve to metal rod) I can get the arm on with a couple taps off the car. If not I'll put the arm on the car with just a couple bolts snug, and I'll smack it on with a block in between. Then remove it because the ball joint will probably have to go in first. So then reassembly would be ball joint, rod, back. All close to snug until it's all on then tighten and maybe torque. The ball joint nut won't able to be torqued though.
