Talked to guy at AAMCO he said Dons VB mod and TransGo shift kits shorten tranny life

He said that he is very strongly against these kinds of mods because they hurt the tranny more than anything. I printed off stuff from Dons site and he said that it was a horrible mod. He said there was a TransGo kit for the Maxima that would turn it into a manual meaning that the gears would not shift unless the Auto stick was moved manually and for fourth gear you have to push the OD button. He said all these kits do is lubricate the tranny a little bit more but shorten the life by 100k miles. He said a tranny with those mods wont last more than 50K miles. Anyone have any imput on that? I thought that these mods INCREASED tranny life. Is this guy just full of ****. That shift kit that makes it manual sounds kinda cool really. Anyone had any experience with any of these? Thanks

Shorten tranny life? Correct me if I'm wrong here but it should INCREASE tranny life because the shifts are much more crisp, eliminating the jello action going on inside your tranny. But bottom line is.... Should of bought a 5 spd

I don't know about the shiftkit, but as for the VB: There are no absolutes, however, just about everyone with it will tell you that their trannies feel stronger, crisper and they are much more confident in them now than before the mod. Don's car (before the VB mod) was about to drop a tranny because of frequent racing. Having nothing to lose he fiddled with the valvebody. I believe he ran another 10 to 15 k on that tranny (numbers could be wrong). Given an almost toasted unit his mod prolonged its life considerably.

Plenty of people have gotten the VB mod done, it has been around for a few years and I have yet to hear a complaint.

I would say your mechanic is full of grade A bullsh!t. If he doesn't want to install it go to someone else or do it yourself.

Im not talking about buying a 5 speed or starting that argument because I know I should have bought a 5 speed but I didnt. Oh well ill work with what ive got. All i said was that I thought this guy was full of **** for saying it would cut the tranny life in half. I just wanted to know if anyone had any experience with the Trans Go kits or Dons VB mod. Thanks

I agree with what you guys are saying. This guy ISNT my mechanic just a guy who happened to be at the desk when I went in to talk to them about it. He said he would gladly install it but he didnt like to do it because he said the Maxima has a very strong tranny and it doesnt need to be messed with. I know that Dons VB mod is a good one im mostly wondering about the TransGo kits. Thanks

Only about 50% of mechanics knows their stuff->

The other 50% are idiots. Most of them can barely read and write.

Why, so then he can experience bearing failure at 50-60k?

The 4th gen auto is ****. i hate the auto. it takes it a second or two to decide on gearing and downshifting when you floor it. i hate it when the throttle isn't directly proportional to the pedal. But I bought it for convienience, so here's my punishment. The 5th gen (2K2 at least) trannies are much better and people have cranked out 14.4 in a stock auto!

I don't know about being strong, but it's definately a drain on the fun factor. But it's still good enough to let me get away with a few second burnout from a dead stop. as soon as i get nitrous (hopefully in the summer) i'll be chirpin in 2nd!

I doubt he's driven a 4th gen auto for more than a few days or maybe he's just not demanding as far as performance goes. I'd love a 5spd but I'm still happy with my autotragic. I think this guy is full of ****.

I haven't seen anything on the transgo kit, is it anything like Cattman's TCU package?

total bs. i never trust people like that anyway. the vb is suppose to prolong your tranny. the vb is strong to handle almost 10psi of boost when i was sced and i haven't run into any problems. so, yes your mechanic is full of ****.

Where is that BS flag when you need it.
Trannies usually only last 100K miles in excellent mechanical shape.
Over time as the clutch plates come together the sandpaper type grip wears off. So the VB mod tightens up the shifts and locks the plates quicker and firmer to prevent mid shift slippage. His mod will increase the life. However it will only last as long as you take care of it. Stay away from neutral drops and stuff

The guy really DOESN'T know what he's talking about, hehe. Yeah, it has a very strong tranny until you reach about 210hp. Ask him what he thinks about 300-400hp? Is it still strong? Sounds like a tech-school drop-out to me, he's probably scared to do the work (its over his head).

I wish this guy would have told me this was a bad thing three years ago, I wouldn't have done it, and put about 40,000 more miles on the same tranny, driving it daily, and putting down those 12's at the track.

Ask the 150+ people that have our VB upgrade in their car, and see if they are having problems, you might get the same answer from the 4 people that have the Transgo "kit".

How well I remember. AAMCO Transmissions is on my "never trust again" list. Once on it, you can never get off.
