Battery and ALT light

Gen 4 Maxima - Left headlights on and dead, dead battery. Had it jumped, started easily. Took off and 1/2 mile down road, ALT light comes on and car dies. No luck charging battery and jump negative. ???

If the battery shorted out internally (which they can do), you won't be able to charge it and probably can't jump start the car either. So get the battery checked.

Start by checking the battery voltage.
