Broken antenna, getting the rope out of the motor

All,

A few days ago I broke my antenna.... . The rope from the automatic antenna is still stuck in the antenna motor and I can't replace the antenna until I get it out. I have the nissan service manual and searched through it to find steps for removing the motor and opening it ,but can't find any referance for that. Anyone know how to get the motor off of the car or have a step-by-step guide on how to do this. I tried to remove the motor myself ,but found that there were a lot of connections I'm not too familiar with in there and since it's in such an obscure location I really don't want to start pulling wires.

I searched through this forum ,but found very little to go on so I'm posting this, your help is appreciated.

Thanks

This is out of a Chilton's manual

Remove the antenna nut and base.
Disconnect the antenna cable at the antenna.
Remove the mounting bolts at the bottom of the power unit.
Remove the power unit through the trunk.
Doesn't say anything about how to open it though. Hope this helps!

Does any part of the nylon rope show when the antennae is in the extended position? If it does, then remove the nut on the outside of the car and then turn the radio on and have it run as far up as possible. Then use some pliers to hold the rope up and have a buddie shut the radio off. The antennae motor will try to pull it back down and you will hold it. The antennae will fail and eventually stop trying (What ever you do do not force the rope out by pulling on it as you WILL strip nylon gear inside the motor housing and have to replace the entire assemble). Then turn the radio back on and the motor should spit out the rest of the nylon rope and mast. If it doesn't, just repeat the previous step with the pliers. You then can insert the new mast.

If not, just follow what Prolepsis quoted from chilton's. The antennae assembly conmes apart with 3 or 4 screws.

On mine, the mast is damaged at the base and will not extend fully. Guess I'm going to have to remove it by disassembling the motor unit. I have Haynes and they do not go into disassembling the unit. They assume the old mast can extend fully and be removed. No mention even of the vent tube at the bottom...

Not necessarily. How far up will the antennae go?

If you have enought space (a foot or so), you should be able to use wire cutters and cut the mast off just below where it is damaged (with the antennae extended). And, after the outside nut is off, the remainder of the mast should just slide off the nylon rope leaving about a foot of nylon rope hanging. The nylon rope is attached at the end (tip) of the mast. Then follow the proceedure I outlined above. Be sure not to shut the radio off until you have pliers gripping the nylon rope.

In my scenario the old rope is completely inaccessable. After removing the broken anteanna mast I noticed that it was empty, no rope anywhere. I'm pretty sure the old antenna rope is stuck in the motor because of what I said above and also because of this point.
- When I tried to feed the new rope from the new antenna mast into the motor it wouldn't go, now matter how hard I tried.
From reading all the manuals and instructions this process should be pretty straight forward. Oh well...if I can't find a solution to this then I'll just get a rubber dummy antenna....

Okay, not too hard to remove the assembly. If you have decent mechanical skills you should be able to make the replacement by disassembling it.

Good luck
