Front suspension or ? dull rattle help?

'98 Max, 100K miles but relatively rust free southern car. No suspension work ever done on the car. I did have a axle replaced a while back due to a bad boot.

I'm getting a dull rattle from the front right side. You hear it after hitting a bump or lump in the road. Sounds like something gets vibrating and vibrates three, five or ten times depending on the size of the bump. It's dull, not sharp, if you told me my sway bar bushing was dead and the bar was rattling inside a loose bushing, that's the sort of sound. Something gets vibrating, then calms down until the next bump.

It's been getting worse over the last few thousand miles since I first noticed it, but it's still subtle enough that most non-auto geeks probably wouldn't notice it yet.

I jacked the car and checked the wheel at 9:00/3:00 and 12:00/6:00 and I could not find any play. Seemed firm. It also doesn't seem to have play when driving - handles well.

Ideas on what to check? Any common items that would do this?

Check your inner tie rods, outer tie rods, sway bar bushings, control arm ball joint, sway bar end links, control arm bushings, strut mount and bearing, could always be heat shields.

Thoughts on ways to check those? As I mentioned, I did the 9/3 & 12/6 tests at the wheel/tire... used a 3' pipe under the tire for the 12/6 and had someone hold the steering wheel while I strong armed it at 9/3. How can I check the strut & mounts in the driveway and the control arms?

Are there heat shields on the pipes in front?

Yea pipes got heat shields. You don't want my advice, it's so cheap replace everything. Good luck. A video would pinpoint the noise. If you don't want to do the leg work, replace everything. Could be hidden issues.

Your strut mounts could be loose

A good indicator of a bad strut mount is the center nut not staying in the center of the mount. Have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth and watch the nut for movement.

Thanks. I will check this as well as the previous suggestion of a loose mount, although I thought I did when I shook the wheels looking for problems. I could have missed it though.

Is there anything under there that tends to rattle that's not suspension related?

that right there tells me that you'll probably need to replace a few things just to tighten up the front end. and the cars what, 18 years old?? stuff wears out. especially rubber parts that dry out and cause metal to metal noises. search will reveal a lot of answers for you.

Found the problem... bad strut. I heard this problem first at least six months ago but the struts checked out OK in the driveway. This time I was able to nail it down by bouncing the car.
