maxima vs. VR6

an mk3 VR6 vs a 95-99 maxima spd.

I'm not saying a vr6 is faster because I own one. So don't say a maxima is faster because you own one.

Ditto, Are you asking which one is faster or just making a comment?

A stock VR6 would loose to a stock Maxima. I know because One of the friends has the VR6 and the other Maxima. Maxima always wins. But VW has a lot more aftermarket parts which will make it faster than a Maxima.

Back to the subject.

Yep. Stock vs stock, 5 speed vs 5 speed, the maxima will win. Basic bolt on VR6 vs Stock 5 speed max is a good race. Once the maxima starts modding though the VR6 will be in a world of hurt until he gets some Shrick cams or an EIP Tuning turbo kit

what about top end, like a 80 MPH and up race? my vr6 pulls pretty hard up there.

also what do all of you maxima enthusiasts think about mk3 vw's? I am still a maxima enthusiast myself but decided to go VW because of the community and aftermarket. I also really like the cars.

In an automatic transmission bout >>

The 4th Gens have an advantage over Mark 3 VR6s and B4 Passats.

I've played around with (I don't race )a friend's 1996 VR6 Jetta GLX and another's 1997 Passat GLX and been able to out accelerate both of them. The friend with the Jetta let me take her car up on the highway and I pushed it pretty hard...just didn't seem as quick as my '97gxe...but hey, mine should be faster...it's got 14 more horsies under the hood.

Except for the New Beetle. My GF has a Mk4 Golf 1.8T...and I love driving that car.

Mk3s are nice...especially the GTIs.

I've beaten GTI mkIII and MkIV many times over stock and modded. I found the MkIII with 15" rims, intake and chip was the quickest. We were even from first to mid 5th. I've pulled MKiV many times (he was probably stock). So yes I am telling you I can beat Vr6 GTI. I haven't seen the new ones on the road yet (200HP+) but I'm sure they will rock!

Passat VR6 is garbage. The Jetta is ok but I find the GTI to be quicker for sure.

Btw I have a 2k1 5spd Max.
I have owned a MKIII GTI VR6, and a Corrado VR6

I've been in my buddy's mkIII GTI VR6 and raced a MKIV a number of times and would pull at least 2 cars each time to only 60mph! The new GTI 24V will be sweet!

A 95 VR6 Golf will run approx 14.7 to 14.9 stock, I know my son has one and has raced it for the last two years. It is now in the 13.1 range and this year will run in the mid 12's easily. True the bolt-ons for the VR6 are quite numerous compared to the Maxima but stock to stock I wouldn't bet a nickel on the outcome they are both great engines. I plan on racing my 97 Max this year in his class but don't think I want to spend the money to try and compete with his times. However its bracket racing and all I need to win is consistency and very low R/T's.

Of course he's an incredible driver he's my Son. All joking aside most stock GTI's just barely run sub 15's. But the VR6 is an incredible engine even if I do have a Max, I almost bought one till I read a little about their automatics and decided on the Max. But on second thought the Maxima auto isn't much better for longevity. One thing I do like about my Max though is the limited slip, sure is nice not to have a "ONE WHEELER PEELER" for a change. It does make for a much better launch.

the deal with my friends mkiv GTI vr6 is that it has 3 short gears.. 1st 2nd and 3rd.. so if he gets a good launch on you.. you are toast..

after that they die off after 100 mph.. they crawl..

I like VR6s a lot, but I have the hardest time believing that GTIs of any VR6 variety are capable of destroying a well driven 5 speed 4th gen or higher. They weigh over 3000lbs and they put down 155-160fwhp and 155fwtq in stock form. The 4th gen 5 speed will put down 165fwhp and 175fwtq in stock form. It's all about power to weight ratio. The Max doesn't need the gearing the VR6 does because the Max has quite a bit more torque. Gearing is just torque multiplication. I've run my buddies 97 GTI VR6 (stock) from rolls and from stops. It's not close either way. I'm modified so it's not a fari comparison. I've driven the VR6 and it does have some deep gearing, but it doesn't provide the strong and linear acceleration the Max has. The VR6 feels "sprinty" is each gear while the Max feels stout in each gear. And after 85mph, those VR6s feel like they out of steam.

the 2001 and 2002 GTI Vr6's dyno'd at 171 whp..

which is funny because the 2002 comes with 201 hp and the 2001 supposedly comes with 170 hp... i told my friend that some of the 2001 had 201 stock.. but he said i was full of it.. till some guy dyno'ed his 2001 and got 171 bone stock.. now the day cars dyno more than stock hp.. i will drink gas.. but i suspect since the GTI's were made in Germany.. they put that engine in a year early.. and thats why my friends GTI can run modded 5spds..

ask russ about the GTI that ran him and Ants97SE .. he beat russ and he beats Ants..

Ants has CAI/Ypipes/Catback.. i am going to post the vid.. and you can see how Ants gets creamed.. and Ants can drive..

A lot of guys around here put MkII (i know it is an older body style) Golf bodies on corrado vr6 chassis. For some reason they fit close to pefect and lighten the car up big time! Ultimate sleeper! VR6 Turbo hybrids are just crazy stoopid! A few other guys I know have NOS gti VR6 and again just gets stoopid.
