car doesn't start, please help!

Hey guys,

So my car died on me this morning, when I try to start it, it cranks for about half a second, but then stops, and the alarm goes off. I'm thinking it's not the battery because radio and lights still work fine..

I did a search and I'm guessing its the starter. It's been hard to start intermittently for the past 2 weeks, and I have two ECU codes, both having to do with the EVAP canister.. I have no idea if the two problems are related. But now my car is dead, and I'm wondering what I should do next... Any suggestions are appreciated.

Was it squeeling or anythign when you were trying to start it before? Like in the last two weeks when you said it seemed worse.

No it doesn't squeal, in the last 2 weeks sometimes it took like 5 seconds of the starter working non-stop to start it, but sometimes it started fine.. Today, its just dead, but I'm thinking its the battery, because the alarm goes off when I try to start it. Every time I used to disconnect the battery, I remember the alarm used to go off when I reconnected it, so I'm thinking now the battery is dying when I crank it and then it comes back when I stop..

Do you have a meter like a VOM? Or even a car abttery tester? If so try taking some measurements both when it is off and when your trying to start it. See if your getting any changes there. If not sounds like no juice from the battery.

does anybody know if the alarm going off every time I try to start it, is that an indication that the battery is dead? Because if i just disconnect and reconnect the battery, without trying to start it, the alarm also goes off. So I'm thinking the battery gets momentarily drained when I crank the engine, but when I stop, some power comes back and the alarm comes on..

Please help! Do I need a new starter or battery?

I'm going to try to jumpstart when my parents get home, but I don't really have high hopes for that.

It sounds like your on the right track with battery. If you can jump it, take it Autozone or Wal-Mart or other parts store. Most places will test your battery and alternator for free. This should help you work towards a solution.
