Y'all tell me if this choice makes sense to you. My '97 is at 40k miles and the Toyos are worn out. Shopping around it comes down to the Yoko Avids vs. Dunlop D60s. The D60s have the performance, but also have a rep for noise. Don't know what's up with the Maxima's but mine already transmits road noise like I'm inside the wheel well.

So I'm thinking to go with the Avids. I like a solid ride (minimum lean) and would like the breaking performance of the D60s, but the Avid does seem like a decent performing tire, and it would be nice to be able to have a conversation on a concrete road.

Oh yeah, and the D60s are only available in 225/50 not the stock 215/55. Would this screw up anything?

What'ya think?

Mister Rone

THe toyos that you have are the 16" proxes? well, the 215/55 that you are looking for is a size that the 225/50 can compensate for if you stick with the D60's.
As a note, spend a few more dollars and get the sp5000 for the money--you are getting quiet, comfortable riding tires.

IF you do a search there has been a lot said about these tires.
And if you want a good deal, tire rack has some old Bridgestone RE71's--they are pretty amazing also--but tend to wear out quickly.

ANd personally, I have the firstone sh30's and they are pretty good also...

look around--and check out tirerack and tires.com...

Where did the D60's get a reputation for noise? It's pretty quiet if you ask me. Plus I heard the Avids really weren't all that great.

D60A2's all the way.

My Dunlop D60 story came from the Tirerack site where both professional tests and user feedback indicates that they are noisy. But, I appreciate your feedback as well and am now leaning in that direction. No one around here that I've called can come up with the P6000s....

and right my Toyos are the 16"

My new Dunlops SP-5000 are on the way to my house as we speak. I heard a lot of good things about them. They r high performance all-season tires. Many people recommend them.
I'll give you my oppinion as soon as i install them.

well, I ran those before... and they were not that noisy. But then that's my subjective feeling. Aren't the D60's cheaper than Avids anyways?

If you want H-rated, try Bridgestone RE930i's. They are excellent, a notch above the D60A2's in my opinion.

If you want V/Z rated, go with Dunlop SP5000's.

I've had both the RE930's and SP5000's, and both are excellent. You won't regret getting either of them...just call Tirerack and they'll confirm that.

930's

are very good tires in fact--I had them on an Acura Legend few years back and I think after 4 years there is still a lot of tread left (we gave away the car---too many problems).

The D60's aren't that bad at all--and they are fairly cheap on tirerack. Most places retail the d60's for about 70-85 a piece...which I think is a rip off...but tirerack's prices are very good.

I put the Dunlop SP5000s on my 97 SE 2000 miles ago along with a fstb and all I can say is I have had a smile on my face for about a month and a half. The tires stick so much better than the stockers, great in the wet and I have not noticed any increase in road noise. My only problem was getting the tires balanced properly but after 4 trys they got it just right. I am a happy man.

I doubt if the 930 Bridgestones have been out for more than a year or so. They aren't even listed on Bridgestone's web site yet. BTW, if you have 15" wheels, the 930's are available in 215/60 which gives almost the same dia. as 205/65.

discontinued

The 930's have been discontinued by bridgestone. I went in to a firestone/bridgestone dealer two months ago looking for a set after a tire died on me--and the guy told me they discontinued it in early 99--and therefore there is no listing. Tirerack has it in stokc though--just like the re71--which is from back in the days

Go with Avids. Max's could use a little more noise insulation.

Thanks for everyone's advice today. I wanted to move on this so I did, in the end I decided against the Dunlop's and for Brigestone Turanza Revo. Heard from several people that the Yoko Avids were just not happening and was pleased to find this tire that seems to have it all over that one.

Just drove home from Wheel Works with them. They handle a lot better (better feel, less lean) than the Toyos and they are MUCH smoother and quieter. So I'm happy. Am I wussing out? I don't know, would never give up the 5spd and maybe I'll someday miss the handling or breaking advantage of the Dunlops (or other), but this seemed like the right combo of performance and ride. Here are some links on this tire:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/bs_revo_rd.htm

Also, it's interesting how they have this renewable tread where it somehow keeps new soft rubber in the mix even as the tire wears. Will be interesting to see if this really makes a difference in 3 years. Oh yeah, these also have a 50K warrenty/lifetime.

Sounds interesting, may look at those myself.

Re: discontinued

Actually, the RE930 was discontinued and replaced by the RE930i, which has Bridgestone/Firestone's "Uni-T" wet traction technology (for whatever that's good for). I think the RE930i is still for sale. Even if it's discontinued, try to find it cuz it's a great great tire.
