Sputtering, loss of power and idle issues
What's up people I have a 96 Nissan maxima SE but I've been driving around for about a year and I've been running into sputtering loss of power and idling problem. I've clean my throttle body I've cleaned my mass airflow sensor my temperature air sensor I have also changed my spark plugs and now it seems to kind of spider but Moran so rough idle. The messed up thing about all this is that I still have not gotten a check engine light I don't know what to do anymore I feel like selling it but I love my car so what can I do or what should I do also there's a ticking sound coming from my believe the EGR valve connection not so sure but it's located behind the throttlebody what should I do

Read all threads in the first 5 pages here in the 4th gen forum relating to MAF, coilpacks, and injectors. Also, please do an "advanced Search" and search for "sputtering", "loss of power" etc. Tons of info will pop up.
Chances are, it's one of those 3 things.
Are your new spark plugs NGK platinums? or?
Look for easy stuff like cracked/broken vacuum lines?

Have you checked crankshaft position sensor, camshaft sensor?
These recently gave me issues with no code.
I'm waiting on my replacements now so I can not attest it has solved my issue of sputtering but we'll see this week!
What to look for is hairline cracks in the sensor around the ends of the sensor.

I noticed the Crankshaft pulley on my 01 wobbles a bit while motor is running.
I can't imagine it's normal but is it rubber then goes bad then wobbles?
The sensor picks up the rotation of the Crankshaft pulley right? Then if the pulley wears out it can cause sputtering?
Would a new crankshaft pulley improve performance/sputtering?

Your crankshaft pulley , also called harmonic balancer is not supposed to wobble. It needs to be replaced. It's possibly the reas on for your curent issues.
This forum is for 4th generation maximas. 95-99.
Your car is a 5th generation. You will find more specific help there.

Sputtering could be a weak fuel pump.
Has any of the 4th gen owners had a bad one?
Did you get a check engine light on the board?
If these get weak failing slowly intermittently how would you know with no check engine light?

Fuel system issues.
Yup, either a bad fuel pressure regulator, defective fuel pump, or a clogged filter.
Do you have long cranking times the first start of the day, and if the car has been parked fir over an hour? If so, check fuel pressure.
If that is not also an issue, then proceed as follows:
If the car always runs normally under low power demands, but sputters and looses power under high demand, like on a hill or a freeway on ramp,
The likely cause is the fuel filter. Because it clogged, it can deliver a limited amount of gas.
If the problem is intermittant, but occurs under any given power requirements, the cause is likely the fuel pump, or its circuit.
Possibly there is a bit of corrosion on the fuel pump fuse, at a contact somewhere, or there is mechanical defects in the fuel pump.
The pump is supposed to draw a certain amount of amps. If it draws more than that, it's either because the fuel filter is clogged, or the fuel pump bearings are going bad. Because bad bearings make the pump run slower than it should. Not enough draw to blow a fuse yet, and enough fuel pressure to keep the cel off.
So..... if the fuel pump is old, change it. It might solve your problem. If not, it needed to be changed anyway.
If the problem persists, attach an ammeter to the fuel pump leads in the trunk. Compare the draw to specifications.
There is also a seperate test for fuel delivery.
Like compare the amount of fuel it delivers to the filter againt the specifications.
I know that I'm talking in general terms.
Fuel pump delivery and amp info would be in the fsm, or can be googled.
You tube should cover this genericly as well.
The same general information, say for a Ford , or a VW, etc, would also apply to our cars.

We don't have one of those.
So old-school mechanic skills are used instead.
You made the right call about this problem . I missed it. I was thinking injection issues.
Back in the old days, I had an 84 nissan pickup. With a carbueretor. A neighbor had an 82.
Both did well enough in town, but would cough and gag, and loose power on hills, or on an on ramp.
Cause was not enough fuel delivery to meet demand.
(Due to clogged fuel filters.)
Sometimes it helps to start with the simple things.
